Stoughton High Football Team Wins Playoff Thriller

About one inch.
That's how close the Hingham High football team was away from possibly tying up their game at Stoughton Friday night in first round of the Division 3 Southwest playoffs. Stoughton will be moving on to play Hopkinton, while Oliver Ames will be facing North Attleboro in the other semifinal.
Instead of being a first round victim, the Black Knights came up with arguably one of biggest plays in Stoughton football history to beat the Harbormen, 14-7.
With the clocking ticking down and Hingham with no timeouts, senior running back Sam Benger was stopped at the one yard after a nine-yard gain.
Harbormen quarterback Caleb Brodie was trying get the last play called. Stoughton was trying to rush their goal line defense on field and would have been called for too many men on the field if the ball had been snapped, so the best option turned out to be to call a timeout
"They should haven't got down there," said Stoughton High head coach Greg Burke. "The kid (Benger) made a great run the play before. I had to get my guys in there. I thought they might spike the ball and run one play."
After the timeout, Brodie keep the ball around the right end and tried to fight his way into the end zone, but he couldn't get through a wall of Black Knights.
"It was an unbelievable play, " said Burke. "I know the kid didn't get in."
In the end, Black Knights settled in for the last play.
"The timeout helped because we were able to set up our defense even better to stop that big run ," said Stoughton senior Lennox Green. "They're the toughest team I've played. They were a great team."
"I know our team could hold them," added senior linebacker Dominic Evangelista. "That was a great team effort. We really stepped it up at the end."
On the final drive of the game, Green buried the Harbormen deep with a punt that went out of bounds at the five-yard line with 2:02 left in the game.
Facing a fourth down and seven from the Stoughton 28-yard line. Brodie kept the drive with a 18-yard pass play to John Fisher to get the Harbormen to the 10-yard line, setting the stage for the final heroics.
"That play, I was praying to God," said Green. "Other than the punt again Milton, this was the best punt because this was a big game."
Burke is trying find ways to get Green some breaks during the game. He played offense and defense, punts and handle returns.
"He's a great player," said Burke, "but he gets tired, though. We have to get him out, because he plays the whole game."
Facing a fourth down and seven from the Stoughton 28-yard line. Brodie kept the drive with a 18-yard pass play to John Fisher to get the Harbormen to the 10-yard line, setting the stage for the final heroics.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Black Knights got on the scoreboard in the second quarter. First, Green ran for a 3-yard score and Jake Gibb kicked the extra-point for a 7-0 lead. Gibb set the drive up with two big passes to Green and Joe Girolamo, who was sideline in the second half with a foot injury.
The next time, the Black Knights got the ball, Green broke free for a 54-yard run to the 1-yard line. After Stoughton lost yardage on the first play from scrimmage, Greeen caught a 5-yard pass from Gibb, who added the extra-point for a 14-0 lead.
Stoughton looked they would get a third score at the start of the third quarter, but a penalty and a fumble stopped drives.
In the fourth quarter, the Harbormen started their comeback as Benger caught a swing pass from Brodie and went into the end zone for a 5-yard score.
Stoughton had two big interceptions to stop Hingham in the second half. One was by Jovani Pires and the other by Evangelista in the fourth quarter.
"I broke my wrist and when I came back, I didn't expected to make a catch like that," said Evangelista.  "I was in survivor mode. "
When it comes to the playoffs, everyone is in survivor mode.
