The SHS ice hockey team received the James F. Mulloy Team Sportsmanship Award at a special ceremony at the TD Garden on March 17, the second straight year the program has been honored for its high level of sportsmanship.
For the second consecutive season the Stoughton High Hockey program was honored at the T.D. Garden, home of the Boston Bruins, for playing the game in an exemplary manner, winning the James F. Mulloy Team Sportsmanship Award. The award was presented to Stoughton High, represented by head hockey coach Dan Mark, Principal Julie Miller, and team captains Cory Greenblatt (senior), P.J. Sheehan (junior) and Brandon Lima (junior), Sunday, March 17, on the Garden ice, prior to the start of the MIAA Division 1A high school championship game. For the third time in program history, the Stoughton High ice hockey squad won the James F. Mulloy Team Sportsmanship award. Stoughton, represented by coach Dan Mark, senior captains Josh Potter and Larry Hixon and principal Matt Colantonio, received the award at a special ceremony Sunday on the ice of the TD Garden, prior to the start of the MIAA Division 1A state championship high school hockey game. Only three teams in Massachusetts received this award—the Hingham boys’ hockey and Hingham girls’ hockey teams were the other two recipients. Proposed Foxboro Casino Concerns Sharon Resident Matthew Baldassari sees a casino on Route 1 in Foxboro as drawing bad things to Sharon, where he has resided since the mid-1980s. "You're going to see traffic and you're going to see crime go up" in Sharon, Baldassari said Monday. Although Wynn Resorts' proposed casino site is in Foxboro, residents of neighboring communities are joining the fight against it, says Chris Lowery, No Foxboro Casino's volunteer coordinator. SHS finished second at the state competition in Lowell on March 11. The team will compete at Nationals in Orlando from March 22-26.
With the team’s fifth place showing at states in the fall season, the Stoughton High cheerleaders had already qualified for a trip to Nationals in Orlando at the end of March. But the team has kept earning honors in the winter season leading up to the national competition in Orlando. This past Sunday, March 11, the SHS team came in second at the state competition in Lowell, finishing behind only first place David Prouty High School (Spencer, MA). Stoughton placed ahead of both Bristol Plymouth Regional and Norwood, the only schools to finish ahead of Stoughton at this winter season’s regional competition, held the weekend prior to states. The Black Knights fell 53-42 to Brighton Monday night at the TD Garden in Boston in a MIAA Division 2 state semifinal game.
Leading 32-28 with 3:42 left in the third quarter following two Aaron Calixte free throws, the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team didn’t score again until there was 3:59 left in the fourth when Calixte hit a three-pointer—a span of 7:43, nearly a full quarter. Calixte’s three brought Stoughton within three, trailing Brighton 38-35, but Brighton had taken control of the game during this stretch and the Black Knights couldn’t come up with consecutive stops on defense in the final minutes, falling 53-42 in a MIAA Division 2 State semifinal game Monday night at the TD Garden.
