Cynthia Walsh remains Vice Chair of the Board.
Temporary chair since May 7, John Anzivino's peers on the Stoughton Board of Selectman voted Tuesday night to give him the permanent title. Steve Anastos nominated Anzivino. Both were elected to the board in 2008, and reelected in 2011. With no other nominations, Cynthia Walsh, Bob O'Regan and T.J. Recupero joined Anastos to vote for Anzivino, in what was a unanimous decision. "I thank the board for their support and I certainly hope to live up to their confidence over the next year," Anzivino said. Anzivino succeeds John Stagnone, who served as chairman for the previous two years. Stagnone chose not to run for reelection this year, instead focusing his efforts in restoring the State Theatre in the downtown. With the full board not …
The Hockomock Championship meet was held this past weekend in North Attleboro.
The Stoughton High boys' and girls' outdoor track teams took part in the Hockomock League Championship meet Sunday, May 19 in North Attleboro. The SHS boys finished fifth overall. A full recap for both the boys' and the girls' teams is below: BOYS The following is from Stoughton boys' coach Harvey Blonder: The boys team faced the full Hockomock league for the first time this season at the championship meet. While they didn't dominate the way they did through the Davenport dual meet season, the team more than held their own. Results from the Organizing Against Substances in Stoughton (OASIS) 2013 Stoughton Youth Survey, which collected data about alcohol and drug usage rates among high school and middle school students in Stoughton.
A whopping 83-percent of Stoughton High School students are currently using marijuana. Well, at least that's what the students perceive. In actuality, the current marijuana use rate (having used over the last 30 days) is much lower - 21.5-percent, according to a survey run by the OASIS group (Organizing Against Substances in Stoughton). Statewide, that number is 28-percent, and country-wide it is 23-percent. In the last OASIS survey, conducted in 2011, 28-percent of Stoughton students admitted to using marijuana over the past 30-days. The 21.5-percent is the lowest rate since the 2008 survey (19-percent). Lifetime usage rate for marijuana is also down, with 37-percent of SHS students having tried marijuana, vs. 42-percent in the 2011 …

Capt. Robert O'Donnell of the Stoughton Fire Department was given the award in front of a packed house at Good Samaritan Medical Center Monday night.
A Stoughton Firefighter was given given a “Hero Award” in honor of EMS week Monday night at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Capt. Robert O'Donnell was recognized for his service and quick response during the Boston Marathon bombings. His son, Bobby O'Donnell III, a 2012 Oliver Ames High School graduate, was running in the race and O'Donnell was quick to spring to action as a spectator at the finish line. According to a press release submitted by Good Samaritan, O'Donnell shared vivid pictures, videos and audio tapes from the finish line Monday night. The following is from the Stoughton Recreation Department: The Stoughton Recreation Department celebrated Bay State Bike Week with a "Tykes and Bikes Parade" at Halloran Park on Thursday, May 16. Children decorated their bikes and participated in a parade around Halloran Park. Christine Howe, the seasonal Recreation Office Assistant and triathlete, led the parade. Kyle Mowatt, from Old Colony Planning Council, provided each participant with a Bay State Bike Week t-shirt, bike bell, ankle reflector, and water bottle. Recreation Director John Denison gave an overview of bike safety rules and parents received an informational packet on bike safety. The Stoughton High softball team defeated visiting Canton 10-4 Monday afternoon in Stoughton's final home game of the season.
The Stoughton High softball team hit one out of the park in its final home game of the season, beating Canton 10-4 Monday afternoon. For many of the girls, it was their last time playing on their home turf. The first and exciting inning was vital to Stoughton's victory, as they scored six times. Stoughton is now 6-11 on the season. Canton scored twice to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Stoughton’s girls got control of the game responding with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jordan Angelos, Emma Zuk, Payton Pizzano, Megan Flaherty, Emily Cramer and Nicole Kerman all scored in the first inning. Stoughton defeated Canton 9-3 Monday afternoon to improve to 12-6 on the season.
After scoring 28 runs in their previous two games combined, the Stoughton High baseball team turned in another strong offensive performance Monday afternoon, traveling to Canton and coming away with a 9-3 victory. Stoughton (12-6), having already clinched a playoff berth, is playing to get as high a seed possible in the MIAA State Tournament. The win is Stoughton's sixth win in a row, and it ends Stoughton's Hockomock schedule at 10-6 in the League. Canton is now 3-15. Junior Sam Werman got his second win against Canton this season, pitching 4 and 2/3 innings this time around, allowing 2 earned runs. TOWN MEETING NIGHT ONE: ZONES & DRONES: Stoughton's Annual Town Meeting got underway on Monday, May 20 at Stoughton High School's Auditorium. Scheduled for a 7:30 start, proceedings instead started at 7:48 p.m. The 122 Town Meeting members present (out of 155), took up the first of 80 articles before them, approving several enterprise funds and tackling some of the budget, including adding a couple of new positions. But, the reoccurring talk of the night had to do with privacy rights. Town Meeting members unanimously passed five Enterprise Fund Budgets: Ambulance ($1,307,907), Cedar Hill Golf Course ($223,683), Public Health Association ($935,277), Sewer Department ($6,262,694) and Water Department ($5,055,713).
