Polls Give Markey Double Digit Lead in Senate Race

A look back at the highlights as candidates campaign for U.S. Senate.

Two polls last week show double digit leads for U.S. Rep. Edward Markey over his Democratic opponent U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch in the race for U.S. Senate. Results of a UMass Lowell/Boston Herald poll last week showed Markey (D-Malden) leads Lynch (D-South Boston) by 29.5 percentage points among potential Democratic primary voters.  The poll also shows Markey is leading over all three Republican candidates.  Fifty percent of those polled said they would vote for Markey, while 20.5 percent said Lynch, giving Markey a 29.5 percent lead. Twenty-three percent said they were unsure about how they plan to vote. Markey and Lynch face off in the April 30 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by John Kerry’s appointment to Secretary…

This information leaks like a sieve. Markey is typical "republican money". He has done zero for us. This is a tremendous opportunity to show Washington the difference in classes and that money doesn't win over morals. Lynch is a working man. I am a working person. Need I say anymore. VOTE FOR LYNCH ON APRIL 30.....VOTE FOR THE PEOPLE.   more ›

Stoughton's William “Mo” Cowan Named State's Interim U.S. Senator

Governor Deval Patrick announced Wednesday that his former chief of staff, Mo Cowan, of Stoughton, will serve as interim U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, filling the seat until a special election is held this June.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced Wednesday morning that a Stoughton resident is headed to the Nation's Capital to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate. With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens an interim senator had to be named. On Wednesday, Governor Patrick announced that his former chief of staff William “Mo” Cowan, 43, of Stoughton, will be the interim senator and will serve until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election (click here to view the press conference via 7News). John Kerry Confirmed As Secretary of State

Kerry will replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.

With only three dissenting votes, the U.S. Senate has confirmed John Kerry as the new Secretary of State. Kerry will take over for Hillary Clinton, who is leaving the post after four years. The move means Kerry will have to resign as a senator soon paving the way for a special senate election. The primary election is scheduled for April 30 and the general election will be held on June 25.  U.S. Congressman Ed Markey, D-MA, has announced he is running for the seat. U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch, D-MA has hinted that he may run.  As for an interim senator for Kerry's seat, Gov. Deval Patrick plans to announce his pick on Wednesday, Jan. 30, according to the Boston Herald.

Congressman Lynch Exploring Run for Senate Seat

The congressman said he is giving "serious consideration" to a run for Senate. Lynch currently represents Stoughton and many other nearby towns in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Another Massachusetts Congressman is seriously considering a run for Senator John Kerry’s seat in a special election this year. Congressman Stephen Lynch, a South Boston Democrat, whose district includes Stoughton and many other nearby towns, is reportedly talking to “well-known political consultants” and planning a possible run in a Democratic primary, reported The Boston Herald. “I am giving serious consideration to a run for the United States Senate and am grateful for the support and encouragement I have received in recent days,” Lynch said in a statement to the Herald. The Democratic frontrunner to take Kerry’s seat is Congressman Ed Markey, who is the longest serving member of Congress from Massachusetts. Kerry and Vicki Kennedy, the…

Who Do You Think Should Run for Kerry’s Seat?

After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.

With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election.  Names have already been dropped locally and from afar, including actor and Cambridge native Ben Affleck, who said he is not interested in running for the seat Kerry has held since 1985. Last week, Congressman Edward Markey announced he would make a run for it. Markey is the first prominent candidate to officially announce his interest in Kerry’s seat. Kerry and Vicki Kennedy, the widow of the …

Kerry, Vicki Kennedy Back Markey for Senate

The incumbent senator and widow of the late Sen. Kennedy both spoke positively about Ed Markey's candidacy on Friday.

A day after announcing his intention to run for U.S. Senate, Congressman Ed Markey received the backing of some big names in the Democratic party, including the incumbent senator, Friday. Senator John Kerry, Vicki Kennedy, widow of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee all lined up behind Markey, reported the Washington Post. ”Ed’s one of the most experienced and capable legislators in the entire Congress and it would be an almost unprecedented occasion for such an accomplished legislator to join the Senate able to hit the ground running on every issue of importance to Massachusetts,” said Kerry in a statement. Kennedy also spoke positively about Markey. “I believe that Congressman Ed Markey is the …

Kerry has been nominated by President Barack Obama to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state and is expected to be confirmed.
