POSTHUMOUS HONORS AND A FUNDRAISER FOR JAKE HOFFMAN: Stoughton’s Jake Hoffman would have graduated college on May 10, 2013, with a degree from the Isenberg School’s Department of Tourism Management at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. To the continuing sorrow of his family, friends, and everyone who ever met him, he was tragically killed in an off-campus apartment fire in Amherst on Jan. 21, at the age of 21. In a wonderful gesture by his University, his parents - Anne and Dave Hoffman - received his degree at the Isenberg School of Management Senior Celebration on Saturday morning, May 11. UMass Amherst student Jake Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, died in a fire the morning of Jan. 21 at an off-campus apartment building in Amherst.
Stoughton's Jake Hoffman died from smoke inhalation, Amherst Fire Chief W. Tim Nelson told The Republican of Springfield on Tuesday. Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, was identified as the UMass Amherst college student who died in an early morning fire in an off-campus apartment building in Amherst Jan. 21. He was the lone victim. The cause of the blaze, which displaced more than 30 people, including more than 20 UMass Amherst students, is still under investigation, The Republican reported March 19. UMass Amherst student Jake Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, died in a fire the morning of Jan. 21 at an off-campus apartment building in Amherst. Classmates remember Hoffman in a tribute article which ran in the Massachusetts Daily Collegian.
Like those who knew him in Stoughton, his classmates at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst remembered Stoughton's Jake Hoffman for his "contagious smile" and "charismatic personality." “He had the biggest smile. As soon as he walked into the room, he made everyone a little bit happier,” friend and fellow UMass Amherst student Jay Palermo told the Massachusetts Daily Collegian. The Daily Collegian, an independent student newspaper at UMass Amherst, ran a tribute article to Hoffman on Feb. 4. STOUGHTON TURNS OUT FOR JAKE: The Wake at the Farley Funeral Home on Friday night, Jan. 25 for Stoughton's Jake Hoffman had literally thousands of people going through, some of whom waited nearly four hours in bone-chilling temperatures and snow to pay their final respects to this great young man. The home was adorned with photos that took guests from Jake's infancy to college. Many of the people pictured in these photos with him were crying uncontrollably near his open coffin. This great young man, and his wonderful family, had touched so many people that they were literally lined up around the building and down Park Street. STOUGHTON MOURNS JAKE HOFFMAN: The heart of Stoughton was once again broken earlier this week, with the tragic death of 21-year-old James E. "Jake" Hoffman in an apartment fire in Amherst Monday, Jan. 21. Hoffman, a 2009 graduate of Stoughton High, was in his senior year at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, studying Hospitality and Tourism Management in the school's Isenberg School of Management. At UMass in Amherst, Jake was a member of MESIBA Team, the Club Managers Association of America, and was the Vice President of the Jewish Student Union. STOUGHTON RESIDENT DIES IN AMHERST FIRE: About Town is in deep mourning after learning of the tragic death of 21-year-old Stoughton resident Jake Hoffman in an off-campus apartment fire in Amherst early Monday morning. Hoffman was a student at nearby UMass Amherst. Initially, officials did not release the identity of the lone victim in the Jan. 21 blaze, which also left 32 homeless, according to The Republican of Springfield. However, friends of the family confirmed Hoffman was the victim by Monday evening. Stoughton has lost far too many young people since I moved here about 5 years ago, it seems every month or two I hear of a new passing amongst our young community. I never experienced the sort of losses that these kids & families have had to endure.
