GOP and Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate debated Wednesday night at the Channel 5 studios in Needham.
In the days leading up to the first Democratic U.S. Senate debate, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) has been called upon frequently to explain the vote he took against the health care reform bill in 2010. Wednesday night, Lynch and U.S. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Malden) went several rounds on the topic. They faced-off for 30 minutes at the Channel 5 studios in Needham following a contest among the three declared Republican candidates. For Markey, President Obama's initiative, aimed at universal health care coverage, was "the proudest vote of my career." "Steve, when that vote came up you were wrong," Markey said. The Republican candidates for U.S. Senate leaned on their diverse backgrounds to explain positions on issues ranging from the economy and debt reduction to gay marriage Wednesday night. Gabriel Gomez, a former Navy SEAL and businessman from Cohasset, said that hearing from a variety of perspectives served him well in the military and that he would bring those lessons to bear working with fellow Republicans and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk), saying "Obamacare is bad for Massachusetts" and simply layers federal bureacracy on top of the state's system, highlighted an upcoming legislative proposal on Beacon Hill to reduce health care costs. As debate schedules are set and signatures collected, campaigns are in full swing.
It was another busy week in the race for U.S. Senate last week as we start counting down the weeks to the April 30 Primary. As of Wednesday, two Democrats and three Republicans filed the required number of signatures to run in the special election for U.S. Senate. On the Democrat side we have U.S. Reps. Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch. So far for Republicans, it’s former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan, former Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and State Rep. Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk). All five submitted more than the required number of signatures to the Secretary of State’s office to appear on the April 30 Primary ballot. The following is from a release from the office of U.S. Senator William “Mo” Cowan (D-Mass.): Interim U.S. Senator William “Mo” Cowan (D-Mass.) voted Tuesday to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, a bill that would help to prevent violent crimes against women. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 78-22. Senator Cowan, a Stoughton resident, co-sponsored the legislation Thursday, the day he was sworn into office. The final bill, along with its amendments, were his first votes as a member of the United States Senate. “I applaud the passage of this important legislation. Cowan, a Stoughton resident, was sworn in as Massachusetts' junior U.S. Senator by Vice President Joe Biden on Feb. 7.
U.S. Senator William "Mo" Cowan was sworn into office a few minutes after 12 p.m. on Thursday by Vice President Joe Biden on the floor of the Senate. Cowan, a Stoughton resident, was appointed last week to be interim Senator by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Cowan is taking the place of former Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, who became Secretary of State - serving until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Cowan was the former Chief of Staff for Governor Patrick, before accepting this interim Senate appointment. Prior to his role as Chief of Staff, he also served as chief legal counsel to Governor Patrick, having served in the Patrick-Murray Administration since 2009. Newly elected Massachusetts Senator …

Ok, I breathe the air of the Black Knights, and by association, I dislike the Canton Bulldogs. Nothing personal, but it comes to the Hockomock League, Stoughton is my team. But, Stoughton Historical Society president Dwight MacKerron, says that once upon a time Canton was in Stoughton. “We used to be one town so we have a substantial shared past,” he told About Town. (Stoughton became a town in 1726 with Canton splitting from Stoughton and becoming its own town in 1797). We spoke because the Stoughton Historical Society, together with the Canton Historical Society, is jointly sponsoring an event on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Canton Public Library. While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later Thursday afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. Governor Deval Patrick announced Wednesday that his former chief of staff, Mo Cowan, of Stoughton, will serve as interim U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, filling the seat until a special election is held this June.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced Wednesday morning that a Stoughton resident is headed to the Nation's Capital to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate. With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. But before that even happens an interim senator had to be named.
