Stoughton Clergy Gathers for Thanksgiving Tradition

The Stoughton Clergy Association presented its annual Stoughton Community Thanksgiving Service Tuesday night.

Amid the hectic time of Thanksgiving, Rev. Rebecca Cho of Stoughton's United Methodist Church reminded those in attendance Tuesday night at the Stoughton Community Thanksgiving Service to stop and be grateful for what they have in their lives. "Take time to think about what we are grateful for," Cho urged those in attendance. "Let's watch the gratitude of Thanksgiving spread all around us." Cho told the story of taking her 3-year-old daughter to Sunday School at their church, and the teacher asking her student was she was grateful for that week. When a teenager filled in for the teacher, he asked the same question of Cho's daughter. "It was being passed person to person," said Cho. "A life in gratitude can be spread." This year's service …

DROWNING IN DEBT? HOME UNDERWATER? YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Stoughton has 1,282 homes that are valued less than their mortgage. The "underwater" report comes from Zillow.com, which estimates that about 23% of all owner-occupied single family homes in Stoughton are "underwater." In contrast, 47% of Brockton homes in the 02301 zip code are "underwater," while 46% in the 02302 zip code are. Randolph is at 36% and Holbrook at 27%. On the flip side, Sharon has 9%, Walpole is 11%, Canton is 13%, Avon is at 19%, and North Easton (02356 zip code) is 15%. South Easton (02375 zip code), however, is at 28%. TOWN PAYS RESPECT TO FATHER OF FORMER FINCOM CHAIR: About Town sends sincerest condolences to former Finance Committee Chair Holly Boykin on the sudden loss of her beloved father, Joseph Isbitsky, 71 of Stoughton. Services were held at the Stanetsky Memorial Chapel in Canton on Sunday, Oct, 7. The chapel was jam packed, and much of it was from her friends and associates from the Stoughton community. Faces in the chapel crowd included selectmen Cynthia Walsh, Bob O'Regan, John Stagnone and John Anzivino; current finance committee chair Rick Hill and his wife Anita; school committee vice chairman Joyce Husseini; Stoughton Public Schools Food Service Director Ed Gilbert; and fincom member Barbara Anzivino. VOLUNTEERS TO BE HONORED: A tradition started a few years back by former Board of Selectmen Chairman Steve Anastos will continue later this month under the direction of current Chairman John Stagnone. All volunteers in the town will be invited to a barbecue lunch on September 22 at the Old Colony YMCA Branch in Stoughton.  The fun will start at 12:30 p.m. Stagnone tells About Town that all town meeting members and volunteers on boards, commissions, and committees will be receiving their invitations soon.  “There will be a couple of hundred people invited, and usually around 125 show up,” he tells me, adding, “We tried to do something in December of 2011 with the Events Committee, but it never got off the ground.  So, instead of doing …

Stoughton Obituaries (Week of July 16)

The following are obituaries for Stoughton residents or those with Stoughton ties for the week of July 16: Marie E. (Tobin) Sheehan, Scott W. Duclos and Walter L. Rush.

Marie E. (Tobin) Sheehan Marie E. (Tobin) Sheehan, 86, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died peacefully Thursday, July 19, 2012, after a period of failing health. She was the wife of the late Patrick J. Sheehan, a dedicated mother of seven children and a loving grandmother and great grandmother. Mrs. Sheehan was a life-long advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves. Always a catalyst for change, her 20 years of leadership and innovation as the Director of Community Services at Catholic Charities in Brockton touched countless lives. She founded The MainSpring House and Shelter in Brockton and was Co-Founder of the south shore region of Lost Coin Women's Fund, a foundation that provides scholarships for women to continue …

"ELVIS" COMES TO STOUGHTON: Have you seen Elvis? On Saturday, June 9 at 9:30 p.m. you will have the chance to catch the closest thing to hearing Elvis Presley and his band live on stage.  That evening, Ahavath Torah Congregation in Stoughton will be hosting Dana Zagoreos, or Dana Z, backed by the Memphis Miracles.  This tribute band truly brings Elvis Presley and his music to life. Dana Z placed top 10 in the Greater Boston Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest and Festival in 2008. STOUGHTON RESIDENTS OPEN BASEBALL/SOFTBALL TRAINING FACILITY: Long-time Babe Ruth and Stoughton Youth Baseball coaches Don Connors, Rich Jasmin and T.J. Fisher have opened up Dirt Dawg Sports Training Facility at 40 Industrial Drive, Unit 3A in Canton (off Rt. 138 at Dave's Tire).  They will be holding a Grand Opening on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and invite About Town readers to attend. RAISING CASH FROM LEMONS:  Proud Stoughton mom Hollie Tiso tells About Town that her four children sold lemonade the past two years to generate funds for Children's Hospital.  Last year, the four kids raised $115. This year, in a tougher economy, they raised $200!  Kudos to Grace Tiso, age six, and the Tiso Triplets---Gregory, Tyler and Sean, who are four.  Holly said she only invited family and friends to the lemonade stand. Next year, she'll let us know about it in advance, and we'll spread the word.  Added Tiso, "Grace wanted a lemonade stand and I am not really one to have my kid beg strangers on the side of the road, so we agreed she could have one, but we would invite only friends and family.
