ABOUT TOWN: Stoughton VFW to Honor Student Essay Winners, Teachers of the Year

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY WINNERS ANNOUNCED:  Michael Romanuk VFW Post 1645 in Stoughton recently announced the local winners of this year's National VFW competitive educational programs. Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the VFW's premiere scholarship program. Each year over 50,000 high school students compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives.  Students write and record a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. This year 's topic was, "Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?"  Stoughton Historical Society's Past President Joe DeVito, who is co-chairman of the local Voice of Democracy competition with VFW 1645 Quartermaster Rudy Medeiros, tells About Town that the 1st place winner at Stoughton High School is …

Hansen School’s Susan Zbinski Retiring on Top

The 4th grade teacher at the Hansen School was named the 2011 Stoughton Teacher of the Year. She retired at the end of this past school year.

Susan Zbinski, now a former 4th grade teacher at the Hansen Elementary School, had one exciting final year of teaching. She not only welcomed her first granddaughter, Charlotte, while planning for her upcoming retirement, but she was also honored as Stoughton’s 2011 Teacher of the Year. In a crowded Sapphire Manor in Sharon, on June 9, many esteemed Stoughton Public School teachers and administrators, both past and present, gathered to celebrate Zbinski’s remarkable career.  Over a wonderful dinner and festive décor, numerous colleagues and friends highlighted memories of working with Susan.  There were speeches and songs, but more importantly, a room full of warmth and appreciation for a remarkable educator and person.
