Stoughton YMCA Hosts Blood Drive in Honor of Boston Marathon Victims and First Responders

The Stoughton YMCA hosted a well-attended Children's Hospital Boston Blood Drive Thursday afternoon.

In honor of the victims and first responder heroes of the Boston Marathon Bombings, the Stoughton YMCA hosted a Children's Hospital Boston Blood Drive Thursday afternoon.  Like the other blood drives held at the Y, it was run by Mary Coulter-Bennett, a Stoughton resident and group fitness coordinator at the Stoughton YMCA.   She was at marathon on April 15, watching from the grandstands at the finish line, across the street from where the explosion took place.    Her brother, Stoughton resident William Coulter, was running and she was there to support three members of the YMCA staff also running. It's Elementary! 5 School/5K Fun Run! Let's get ready to RUN! The third annual It’s Elementary! 5 School 5K & Fun Run will be on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the Old Colony YMCA in Stoughton (445 Central St.).  Created in a spirit of cooperation and community by the five Stoughton elementary school PTOs/PTAs, It’s Elementary! successfully promotes the ideals of friendly competition, personal bests, healthy choices, and teamwork – all in support of elementary education. For the past two years they have had over 200 registered runners, coming from southeastern Massachusetts and beyond. Stoughton YMCA to Kick off Annual Support Campaign with Spin-a-Thon

The spin-a-thon wil take place at the Stoughton YMCA on March 23, helping make Y programs available to community members, regardless of financial or life circumstances.

The following is from the Old Colony YMCA:  The Old Colony YMCA Stoughton Branch is launching their Annual Support Campaign with two events: Third Annual Spin-a-Thon  From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 members of the community will ‘Pedal for a Purpose’ to raise money to ensure that the community has access to important Y programs, regardless of their current financial or life circumstances.  If you would like to participate in the event or sponsor a spinner, please contact Serah Selmon at sselmon@oldcolonyymca.org. "Try a Tri" at the Stoughton Y This Saturday, Feb. 23, the Stoughton YMCA will be hosting a modified indoor triathlon that allows those who have never done a triathlon, as well as those who have competed before, to have fun and start the triathlon season early. Participants ages 6 and up are welcome and are broken down into different heats. Each age group has a different amount of swim, bike and run that they must complete (see chart below).  The cost for Y members is $10 and Non-Members is $15. CHRISTMAS IS MY FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR:  I've written about it frequently, but I just love the Christmas spirit, and all it brings.  Despite the fact that my dad passed away a week before Christmas 31 years ago, I still look forward to the music of Christmas, and the spirit of goodness that goes with it.  Just look at what the people of Stoughton have done for Firefighter Jack Hussey, whose family lost everything this past Friday due to a fire at their Abington home. I'm sure residents would help him any time of year, but it just seems that people open their wallets more for their fellow man around Christmas.  Look at the food pantries, and how they fill up with needed items, when goodness shows through at the holidays.  Charities receive …

ABOUT TOWN: Take Part in Jingle Jog to Help Support Stoughton Woman Battling Cancer

A JINGLE JOG! Jog a mile to ring in hope and support for a Stoughton woman battling cancer (Hodgkin's Lymphoma). It happens on Saturday, December 15, with check-in at 1:30 p.m. The jog will be held at the West School Athletic Complex, at 1322 Central Street. Bells will be given to each participant, so you can jingle while you jog, and purple ribbons to symbolize Hodgkin's Lymphoma.   There will be raffles, playground fun for the kids, hot chocolate, snacks, and more fun! Cost is $20 per person or $35 per family. The 1-mile jog/walk starts at 2 p.m.  All proceeds will benefit Erica Ebner, a 28-year-old long time Stoughton resident who was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. CHRISTMAS PARADE ATTRACTS LARGE CROWD:  Sunday, December 9, the Annual Stoughton Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Community Events Committee, drew a large gathering in Stoughton Square.  Over 100 hundred people got involved in a trivia game before the parade, an dozens won gift certificates to Papa John's Pizza, The Last Shot, and games provided by PMPNetwork, Inc.  That was the fun BEFORE the parade. At 2 p.m., the first blaring of the sirens could be heard, and with the Stoughton Police Department's motorcycles, cruisers, SUV's, followed by Engine 4 and Ladder Truck 2 from the Stoughton Fire Department, the parade took off.  It started at Stoughton High, went down Pearl Street, and turned onto Washington Street, where I was calling the…

MYSTERY DINNER THEATRE FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS! Little Theatre of Stoughton hosted a Mystery Dinner Theatre on Saturday night, Nov. 3, to benefit the family of Shayla Lutz. Shayla, 3, was killed in a pedestrian accident in September on Central Street, in front of the Hansen Elementary School. Shayla's older sister, Ashleigh, has appeared in shows with the Little Theatre of Stoughton and the family is involved with the group, so Little Theatre of Stoughton wanted to help the Lutz family. The Little Theatre presented "Abduction at the YMCA" before a capacity crowd in the auditorium of the Old Colony YMCA in Stoughton. The play starred Bob DeLuca as Director Cecil B. DePill, and was the story of a director trying to fill an open position in his …
