Stoughton Selectmen Vote to Move Date of Town Election, Push Back Start of Town Meeting

The Stoughton Board of Selectmen voted Monday night to move the annual town election to April 30, the same day as the special state primary for U.S. Senate. As a result, the start of Stoughton's Town Meeting has been pushed back to May 20.

With both the Stoughton annual town election and a special state primary for a U.S. Senate seat scheduled to be held in April, the Stoughton Board of Selectmen took advantage of a state law which allowed the Board to move the date of the town election to the same day as the primary.  Originally, the town election was scheduled to be held Tuesday, April 9, 2013, with the primary for the special U.S. Senate election to fill the seat held by now Secretary of State John Kerry just three weeks later on Tuesday, April 30. After meeting Monday night, Selectmen voted 3-1 in favor of holding the two elections on the same day, April 30.  The decision to move the town election to April 30, which is when Town Meeting representatives are elected, also …

TOWN HALL SPORTING A NEW ROOF:  It was well worth the wait. Stoughton's historic Town Hall is now sporting a new slate roof that should last longer than any child born today will live. Elevator at Stoughton's Town Hall Working Again

Interim Town Manager Joseph Feaster said the Town Hall elevator has been operational since 2 p.m. on Thursday. It broke earlier in the week.

Thanks to Building Superintendent Robert Grover, United Elevator Company of Hingham and Cyr Environmental, the elevator at Stoughton's Town Hall is operating again, Interim Town Manager Joseph Feaster wrote in an email sent to members of the media and the Board of Selectmen. Because of the Town Hall roof project, residents already had to enter through the rear of the building in the basement, one level lower than they normally would enter. But, the elevator wasn't out of service for too long, with Feaster announcing that it…

As a result, Tuesday's meeting was held in the community room of the Police Station. The Town Hall is still open for business, however. The damage is more significant than initially thought, Feaster said. It's not just fixing a few buttons or a pulley, he said - there is an oil leak which needs to be addressed. An environmental company is coming to deal with the oil leak on Wednesday before a repair company can come to fix the elevator. Because …
