Stoughton School officials and members of the Stoughton Police recently took part in ALICE school shooter response training, hosted by the Norfolk County DA. The program encourages a more flexible response to an active shooter situation.
You wouldn't stay in a building that was filling up with smoke, so why do so if there was an active shooter in the building, Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany reasons. The common practice has been for a school to go into lockdown if there was an active shooter in the building, but the more passive approach might not be as effective as a more proactive defense, supporters of the ALICE program say. ALICE - an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate - was developed by Greg Crane, a former SWAT police officer, and Lisa Crane a school principal. The Stoughton Public Schools will be closed Monday, February 11 as cleanup continues from a storm which dumped more than 30 inches on the town.
Looks like a three day weekend became a four day weekend. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marguerite Rizzi informed Stoughton Patch that schools will be closed in Stoughton on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 as cleanup continues from a storm which dumped more than 30 inches on the town over the weekend. Dr. Rizzi announced the decision shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Sunday. Dr. Rizzi said that the school and DPW crews can't have all the school areas clear before Monday. A drive around town Sunday morning showed that while significant progress had been made in clearing nearly 3 feet of snow from some of the schools, the cleanup process was just starting at others. Stoughton Public Schools will be closed Friday, February 8 due to a snowstorm which is expected to drop 1 to 2 feet of snow on the region.
Students in Stoughton will have an unexpected long weekend. In advance of Friday's projected blockbuster snowstorm, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marguerite Rizzi informed Stoughton Patch that schools will be closed in Stoughton on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013. Dr. Rizzi announced the decision shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. "In the latest MEMA conference call they asked for all cars [to be] off the roads by 11 [Friday morning]. That ruled out the half day I had hoped to get in. Safety first," Dr. Rizzi wrote in a text message. The Stoughton School Committee approved a calendar for the 2013-2014 school year at their Tuesday meeting, setting the start and end dates, as well as vacation dates. Early release dates and first day of school for kindergarten still needs to be added.
With about five months left this school year, the Stoughton School Committee and school administrators already started looking ahead to next year's school calendar. The School Committee approved on a 4-1 vote a preliminary calendar for the 2013-2014 school year, which has school starting after Labor Day and ending a week before July 4th if all snow days are used. The calendar has students in grades 1-12 returning to school Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013. Teachers and Unit A staff return the day before, Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013. Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 2. After students in grades 1-12 return that Wednesday they have the next two days off (Sept. 5-6) for Rosh Hashanah and then have two more days off for the weekend (Sept. 7-8) before coming back …

THIRD ANNUAL 5K FUNDRAISER FOR THE SCHOOLS: Rosanna Kelleher and Chris Shannon recently got the OK from Selectmen to run their third annual fundraiser for the schools. The first two, which included a 5K run and a Fun Day, starting at the Old Colony YMCA in Stoughton, raised thousands of dollars for Stoughton's five elementary schools. Kelleher told About Town that the goals are being expanded for this year's event, which will be held on April 27, 2013 at the YMCA. "This year we are excited to be contributing some of our proceeds to funds set up in honor of Dave Wade and Shayla Lutz. STOUGHTON MAN GETS TOP NORTON SCHOOL POSITION: Former Stoughton School Committee member Joseph Baeta is the new Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Norton. The Norton School Committee unanimously voted for Baeta become the new Norton school chief at a January 10 meeting. Baeta, who is in his fourth year as Superintendent of Schools in Holbrook, said that he left that system in much better shape than when he took it over. This new job in Norton is a good fit for him in a number of ways. His wife, Michele, was a Guidance Counselor in Norton, but came home the past five years to take care of their daughter, Maggie. Since Maggie is now at the Hansen Elementary School in Stoughton, his wife returned to Norton Public Schools as a part …
