Photos: Carolers from Stoughton High Jazz Choir Bring Holiday Cheer to Library, Fire Station

Members of the Stoughton High Jazz Choir recently performed holiday songs at the Stoughton Public Library and Freeman St. Fire Station.

Normally a library is a quiet place. But after school on the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 19, the Stoughton Public Library welcomed a group of carolers singing holiday songs. The carolers were members of the Stoughton High Jazz Choir, accompanied by director Griffin Coombs. Stoughton Public Schools Fine Arts Director John Kearns arranged for the visit. The SHS Jazz Choir performed from the second floor over looking the ground floor of the library. After their performance, the library treated the SHS students with hot chocolate, marshmallows and cookies. Sue Hargreaves of the Stoughton Library passes along photos from the performance. MURDER AT TOWN HALL!  Tickets have just gone on sale for the Support Our Library Association (SOLA) fundraising theatrical production in January, titled "Murder at the Library." This "Murder at the Library" will actually be held at the Great Hall on the third floor of Town Hall on Friday, January 18 (with a snow date of the January 25.)  The fun starts at 7 p.m. There is limited seating, so get your tickets early! Tickets are $15 before December 15, and $20 per ticket after that, and at the door (if available). This murder mystery is for those over 21, as beer and wine will be available for purchase. Snacks will also be available. THE LONGEST REALITY DOCUMENTARY EVER! Tom Fitzgerald is a Stoughton documentary photographer who has been pursuing his craft for over 40 years.  He will have his works on display in the upstairs gallery at the Stoughton Public Library starting December 1. This exhibit, which will be displayed throughout the month of December, will feature a group of Irish musicians Fitzgerald met in the early 1970s.  He tells About Town, a documentary photographer takes pictures of what he observes and then attempts to tell a story with these images. He hopes the images will introduce the viewer into a world that ordinarily would not be known, and that it will enlighten them.  He adds, "Some of my documentaries are fun to view, others not so easy." …

LEARNING THE LANGUAGE! The Stoughton Public Library's Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts program was saluted last Wednesday night (November 7) with a potluck dinner and recognition night, held in the Library's Wales French Room. Despite snow, rain and howling winds, the room was full of tutors, students. and leaders of the community. The Literacy Program, which gets some of its budget from taxpayers, and other from grants, was instituted at the Stoughton Public Library in 1998. The Sharon Literacy program, which is connected with Stoughton's, started in 2005. There are currently 110 active students and 66 active tutors in the program. Since 2005, 24 students have become American citizens, including five last Wednesday night. Ten of the …

Gallery: O'Donnell Middle School Students Use Art to Take Stand Against Bullying

O'Donnell Middle School students were honored for their artwork, portraying anti-bullying themes. The artwork is currently on display at the Stoughton Public Library.

Last Thursday a group of O'Donnell Middle School students who took a stand against bullying through art were honored at the Stoughton Public Library. Last spring about three-quarters of the seventh grade in Karen O'Connell and John Dorion's art classes made anti-bullying posters. Eighteen of the posters were recognized for their excellence, receiving first, second and third place designations as well as honorable mentions. The posters have been on display in the upstairs gallery at the Stoughton Public Library since August, and will continue to hang throughout the month of October, which is Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. Library Director Pat Basler said the impact of this anti-bullying art display was seen by hundreds of children …

(SOLA) will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Wales French Room of the Stoughton Public Library. Nominations for Officers and Directors will be presented, and nominations will be allowed from the membership. Elections will take place for the 2013 year. There will also be a recap of the first year’s activities, and a presentation of upcoming events and expenditures.
