The Stoughton High boys’ basketball team beat Oliver Ames 68-42 Tuesday evening at Brockton High in a Division 2 South Sectional semifinal contest. The Black Knights now advance to play Hopkinton in the Sectional finals on Saturday at 8 p.m. at UMass Boston. Stoughton beat OA 68-42 Tuesday evening in Brockton in a Division 2 South Sectional semifinal contest. The Black Knights now advance to play Hopkinton in the Sectional finals on Saturday.
At the end of a Sunday afternoon practice on March 4, Stoughton head coach John Gallivan talked to his team about the importance of making big plays in key moments. If Stoughton was able to do this Tuesday against Oliver Ames, the Black Knights would win. But if the team faltered, the players would be turning in their uniforms and the season would end. The Black Knights responded with perhaps their most dominating victory of the season. Tied at 13 with 1:20 left in the first quarter, the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team went on a 12-0 run to close out the first and start the second, taking a 25-13 lead. In anticipation of Tuesday night’s Division 2 South Sectional Semifinal matchup between the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team and Oliver Ames, your Stoughton Patch editor and Easton Patch Editor Pat Maguire are making a friendly wager on the game. For the fifth time in seven seasons, the Stoughton and Oliver Ames boys’ basketball teams will meet in the postseason. This year a trip to the sectional finals will be on the line. The Black Knights and Tigers will square off Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at Brockton High in a Division 2 South Sectional semifinal game. The Stoughton High boys’ basketball team beat Norwood 55-48 in a MIAA Division 2 South Sectional quarterfinal round matchup Thursday in Canton.
Coming out of a timeout and clinging to a two-point advantage over Norwood with just two minutes left in the fourth quarter, Stoughton’s Antonio “Nuke” Ferreira received an alley-oop pass from Aaron Calixte and threw down a dunk to give Stoughton a 50-46 lead. On the ensuing Norwood possession, the senior forward came up with a block on the other end of the court. The “1-2 punch,” as Stoughton coach John Gallivan referred to it, was the momentum-changer the Black Knights needed late to hold off a tenacious Norwood team. As a result, the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team (18-4) secured a 55-48 win over Norwood (12-10) Thursday night at Canton High in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional tournament.
