LEARNING THE LANGUAGE! The Stoughton Public Library's Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts program was saluted last Wednesday night (November 7) with a potluck dinner and recognition night, held in the Library's Wales French Room. Despite snow, rain and howling winds, the room was full of tutors, students. and leaders of the community. The Literacy Program, which gets some of its budget from taxpayers, and other from grants, was instituted at the Stoughton Public Library in 1998. The Sharon Literacy program, which is connected with Stoughton's, started in 2005. There are currently 110 active students and 66 active tutors in the program. Since 2005, 24 students have become American citizens, including five last Wednesday night. Ten of the …

WHO NEEDS AN EXCUSE FOR TOWN SPA? October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the Town Spa Facebook page, you can help support the cause: Town Spa will donate ALL proceeds from the sale of its Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirts to the Susan G. BLUE CROSS, NEW FIELD: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts sent their "Blue Crew" to the Old Colony YMCA in Stoughton on Tuesday, September 25 and they got things done as part of a volunteer service day. They built a tether ball pit, a bocce court, a washer toss (kind of like horse shoes), a picnic grove with picnic tables, and a new youth/family outdoor fitness area. Dozens of their volunteers did heavy lifting, heavy duty cleaning, and took a brush-filled unused area, and made it come to life. Joe Leaver, Program Director at the Y, was excited after the volunteers left. He stood amid a new picnic grove, and admired all the outdoor fitness areas. "They did an incredible job. LITERACY VOLUNTEERS, STUDENTS HONORED: The Stoughton chapter of the Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts held their Annual Pot Luck Supper and Recognition Night in the Wales French Room of the Stoughton Public Library last Wednesday night. A packed house honored 66 tutors who have opened up the world of English to individuals from all over the world. The students were honored as well. Stoughton Selectman Cynthia Walsh presented Citizenship Awards to Sigrid Harrop, Jenny Holmes, Inessa Kochuchova, and Vedat Shehu. Honors for Significant Advance in English and Literacy were presented to Junie Henry, Maricruz Jones, Thiago Garcia, and Hermenia Munroe.
