PIRES GETS LIONS CLUB'S HIGHEST AWARD: On Saturday, Feb. 23, the Lions Clubs for the Massachusetts District known as 33K held its mid-winter conference at the Hilton Hotel in Dedham. There are 47 Lion Clubs that belong to this district. During the dinner meeting, various awards were presented. The club members choose their members for the various awards. John Pires of the Stoughton Lions Club was awarded the Lions' highest award, the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. The Melvin Jones Fellowship is named for the founder of the Lions Clubs International. Melvin Jones founded the Lions in 1917. The award is presented to members who give of their time back to their community, involvement in the various club's activities and possess the …

STOUGHTON GIRL GETTING A KICK OUT OF SOCCER SUCCESS! Stoughton's Adriana Forcucci was born and raised here. She started playing Stoughton town soccer at age six. Adriana has also played club soccer for the Scorpions for the past six years. She is a freshman at Cardinal Spellman High School in Brockton and even though she is just in her first year there she made the varsity soccer team there. She is a forward on the team, and quite a prolific scorer! She is listed on Boston.com High School Girls' Soccer scoring leaders in the Catholic Central League, with 9 goals and 5 assists for a total of 14 points. Her team is currently 15-0 heading into an October 24 match at Bishop Stang. Her jersey number is “lucky 13." Stoughton is proud of …

SUPPORT YOUR LIBRARY! The first Annual Meeting of Support Our Library Association, Inc. (SOLA) will be held on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 7 p.m. in the Wales French Room of the Stoughton Public Library. Nominations for Officers and Directors will be presented, and nominations will be allowed from the membership. Elections will take place for the 2013 year. There will also be a recap of the first year’s activities, and a presentation of upcoming events and expenditures. Support Our Library Association, Inc. is a non-profit corporation, with IRS 501(c) 3 status, formed for the purpose of raising funds to support programs and services of the Stoughton Public Library. There are three more Sunday concerts this summer season at Faxon Park. The Corvairs kick off the August schedule this Sunday, August 5.
After a week off, the Stoughton Lions Club "Concerts in the Park" for the 2012 summer season continues this Sunday, August 5 at Faxon Veterans Memorial Park on Park Street, across the street from the Stoughton Public Library. The Corvairs, a band that plays “classic hits,” kicks off the first of three August concerts this Sunday. All concerts are Sundays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and are free of charge. Concerts are open to all Stoughton residents. Please bring your own chairs/blankets to sit on. There are no bathroom facilities. Political Asylum, Easy Access and the Westwood Swing Band already performed this summer season in July. STOUGHTON HEAVYWEIGHT WINS AT BROCKTON FAIR: Stoughton's own Sean Bettencourt won his heavyweight boxing match Saturday, July 7, at the Brockton Fair's Brockton Fairgrounds ring. Bettencourt is a four time New England Golden Gloves Champion and a one-time United States Northeast Regional Champion. Travis Demko, a former Black Knight football running back, was also scheduled to box, but his opponent pulled out of the fight. Bettencourt fought three rounds and won a unanimous decision over Worcester heavyweight Bryan Daniels. The 6'4" Bettencourt went to the Olympic trials in the light-heavyweight category (178 lbs.), but it was tough fighting at such a light weight. The first of six summer concerts sponsored by the Stoughton Lions Club features Political Asylum, an oldies band made up of well-known locals. The opening concert takes place Sunday, July 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Faxon Park.

STOUGHTON CANCER SURVIVOR FEATURED SPEAKER: Taking place in the Harvard Medical School Quadrangle on May 20, is the Celebration of Life, a full day of celebration, education and kinship for the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) cancer community to raise awareness about the battle against cancer. This poignant event also welcomes men and women who receive their care from other hospitals in and around Boston – and beyond. Mark Leppo, a Stoughton realtor, is a featured speaker at the event. Mark fought for his life against the rare and deadly Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Surgery, regular chemotherapy and radiation couldn't halt the cancer, and it threatened his leg and his life. LIONS ALL FIRED UP: The Stoughton Lions Club met Wednesday night, February 8, at Chinatown Restaurant. They welcomed special guest, Fire Chief Mark Dolloff (pictured in our Gallery with King Lion Robert Mullen.) Mullen tells About Town, "Chief Dolloff is an excellent speaker. He showed us the progression of thermal imaging technology. The newest are hand-held cameras that are only $4,000 each. These are used to find people in fires." Two of the "older models," to which the Lions contributed towards, are now in use by the Fire Department. Dolloff said that those cameras—which originally cost up to $20,000 each, have been replaced by a better technology, at lower cost, and are now much smaller and easier to use.
