With the win, Stoughton is now 9-5, one win away from clinching a second consecutive postseason tournament berth. After jumping out to an early lead and holding Milford scoreless over the first 5:05 of Tuesday's game, the Stoughton High girls' basketball team cruised to a 59-32 win at home. With the win, Stoughton improves to 8-5 on the season, snapping a three-game losing streak. Milford, meanwhile, falls to 0-14. This is the Black Knights' second win of the season against the Scarlet Hawks, with Stoughton earning a 28-point win on the road back in December. This time around, Stoughton led 17-6 after the first and took a 36-17 lead into the half en route to a 27-point win. Nicole Daniels led the Black Knights with 18 points. The Black Knights had a lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Eagles pulled ahead and came away with a three-point win Friday night in Sharon.
With the still short-handed Stoughton High girls' basketball team up 41-35 heading into the fourth quarter, Sharon hit a series of deep three-pointers to erase the Stoughton lead and earn a 52-49 victory Friday night in Sharon. "We forced them to go to the outside and they do have great outside shooters and that eventually is what got us," Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan said. "We let it get away from us in the last quarter when we let them take three deep three-pointers and they hit all of them, so give them credit," Sullivan added. A look back at the first half of the 2012-2013 season for the Stoughton High boys' and girls' basketball teams and a look ahead to the second half and what each squad needs to do to earn a postseason berth.
Last Friday's games vs. Oliver Ames marked the midway point in the 2012-2013 winter season for the Stoughton High boys' and girls' basketball teams. Both have played 10 games and both have 10 remaining. Here's a look back at the first half of the season for both teams and a look ahead to the second half and what each squad needs to do to earn a postseason berth. Both squads made the postseason last season and are looking to do so again this winter. After losing a strong core of players from last season's Division 2 South Sectional championship team, Stoughton was looking to find a new identity throughout the first half of the season. In a battle between two of the top teams in the Hockomock League's Davenport Division, a depleted Stoughton High girls' basketball team put up a fight, but fell 50-37 to unbeaten Oliver Ames Friday at home. OA and Stoughton were tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter, but the Tigers outscored the Black Knights 21-5 in the second quarter to take a 30-14 lead into the half en route to victory. OA extended the lead to 42-19 after three quarters. Stoughton outscored OA 18-8 in the fourth, but it was not enough. The Tigers are now 10-0, while Stoughton falls to 7-3.
