Stoughton fell 70-46 at Braintree Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 South Sectional Tournament. The Black Knights end the season with a 14-8 record.
The Stoughton High girls' basketball team went into Friday night's tournament game as the consensus underdog, traveling to Braintree, last season's Division 1 South Sectional Champion. And while the Black Knights lost, 70-46, in what appears to be a lopsided margin, they were no easy out - Stoughton kept the game close throughout the first half, and even when the team fell behind by double digits in the second half, fought back. The Stoughton High girls' basketball team jumped out to an early lead en route to a 60-33 win in the regular season finale Tuesday against Notre Dame Academy at the Sharon Basketball Classic. Stoughton, now 13-7, will prep for the MIAA state tournament. On Friday the team will find out its seeding in the Division 1 South Sectional bracket and if it will get to host a tournament game, Stoughton coach Janet Sullivan said. The Stoughton High girls' basketball team was in action Monday afternoon at the Sharon Basketball Classic when they fell to Holliston, 52-50, on a Stephanie Berard buzzer-beater with no time remaining. With the game tied at 50 in the fourth quarter, Stoughton had a chance to take the lead at the other end of the court, but turned the ball over, giving Holliston about 20 seconds to run a final play. "Our defense held for the first shot [attempt], but we did not box out, we gave them the second shot and against a team like this you give them too many opportunities and it's going to cost you and it did. Oliver Ames came away with a 65-17 win against the visiting Stoughton High girls' basketball team Friday night.
The Oliver Ames girls' basketball team, hitting on all cylinders offensively, defensively and in the rebounding game, capped an undefeated 18-0 regular season by beating Stoughton, a playoff-bound team, 65-17 in Easton Friday night. Stoughton entered the game on a five-game winning streak. The 17 points is a season low for the Black Knights. The Stoughton High girls' basketball team improved to 12-5 with a 50-29 win at Canton Wednesday evening. It was Stoughton's second win over Canton this season.
After being held to 19 points in the first half, the Stoughton High girls' basketball team scored 19 just in the fourth quarter alone, pulling away at Canton and spoiling the Bulldogs' senior night, winning 50-29 Wednesday evening. With the win, Stoughton improves to 12-5, while Canton falls to 2-15. Already playoff bound, each win Stoughton gets as it closes out the regular season will help to improve its seeding come state tournament time. At the end of the Stoughton High girls' basketball team's hard-fought 45-42 senior night win Thursday at home, the team's six seniors and their parents were in no rush to leave the court, soaking up another milestone in a year full of them leading up to graduation.
