About 40 children spanning grades 3 through 8 attended the DA's Basketball Clinic held the mornings Feb. 19, 20 and 21 at the O'Donnell Middle School gym.  In addition to drills, this three-day clinic also stresses the positive influence participating in sports can have off the court as well.   The clinic was organized by Stoughton resident Paul Wilder, who works for Norfolk Country District Attorney Michael Morrissey. Stoughton resident Carl Boen, …

Despite Missing Postseason, A Year to Remember for Stoughton High Boys' Basketball

An inside look at the 2012-2013 Stoughton High boys' basketball team, a squad that fell one game short of making it to another postseason state tournament.

The MIAA released its postseason state tournament brackets on Friday, and for this first time since this year's group of seniors were in fifth grade, the Stoughton High boys' basketball team did not make the cut.  Yet, they were still the team nobody wanted to face. 9-11 is the one record no team wants to finish with. It leaves teams wondering what they could of done differently in one game, one quarter, one possession in order to get to that magic number of 10 wins and a chance to play in the tournament.  Stoughton finished the season with just that, a 9-11 record, and will miss the tournament for the first time since the 2005-2006 season. Going into the 2012-2013 Stoughton High boys' basketball season, nobody knew how this team would …

Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Falls Short of Clinching Postseason Berth

The Stoughton High boys' basketball team lost to Walpole 76-64 Monday night in the season finale, finishing the year with a record of 9-11, one win short of qualifying for the postseason.

Needing a win in order to qualify for the postseason, the Stoughton High boys' basketball team looked well on its way following a strong first half of play at Walpole Monday night. The Black Knights shot 53.3 percent (16 for 30), holding a 38-26 lead after two quarters in the finals of the Walpole Hoop Classic. Walpole, meanwhile, shot just 34.5 percent (10 for 29) in the first half, as Stoughton twice led by as many as 16-points.  The second half featured a complete reversal, however, with Walpole heating up, shooting 60 percent (15 for 25), in addition to making 16 of 19 second half free throw attempts. Stoughton went cold, shooting 22.2 percent (8 for 36), and as a result, its first half double-digit lead turned in to a double-digit …

Take a look at a video of Middleton scoring his 1000th career point in the media gallery of this article.  *** Needing four points to become the 14th player in school history - boy or girl - to score 1,000 career points, Stoughton High boys' basketball senior captain Marcus Middleton stole the ball twice in the first quarter Sunday night against Boston Latin and both times headed to the hoop for an uncontested layup.  The first steal came about a minute and a half into the game, which led to an easy layup, giving Middleton 998 career points. The second steal came with 1:57 left in the first quarter. The senior captain, known for his tenacious defense, jarred the ball loose around mid court and headed to the basket. As Boston Latin's Adam …

Still Standing: Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Beats Boston Latin; Postseason Berth on the Line in Finale

The Stoughton High boys' basketball team beat Boston Latin 63-52 Sunday night in the opening game of the Walpole Hoops Classic. Stoughton will face host Walpole in the finale Monday night with a trip to the postseason on the line.

We'll see you Monday night. The Stoughton High boys' basketball team lives another day as they improved to 9-10 on the season with a 63-52 over Boston Latin Academy in the opening round of the Walpole Hoop Classic Sunday night at Walpole High.  With the win, Stoughton will play host Walpole Monday night for a chance to clinch a berth in the MIAA state tournament. A loss would end Stoughton's season. A loss Sunday against Boston Latin would have eliminated Stoughton as well, but the Black Knights jumped out to an early lead and cruised to victory. With 1:57 left in the first quarter, history was made as senior captain Marcus Middleton became the most recent addition to the Stoughton High's 1,000 point scoring club. Middleton is the third …

The Black Knights will need to win their final two games at the Walpole Tournament Sunday and Monday. Middleton led Stoughton against OA, scoring a career-high 30 points, finishing just four points shy of joining Stoughton High's 1,000 point club. Take a look at photos from senior night in the media gallery of this article.

Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Falls Short Against OA on Senior Night

The Stoughton High boys' basketball team fell 77-70 Friday night. The Black Knights are now 8-10 and need to win their last two games in order to qualify for the postseason.

After shooting 51.4 percent (18 for 35) in the first half of Friday's game against Oliver Ames, the Stoughton High boys' basketball team shot just 21.4 percent (9 for 42) in the third and fourth quarters as an eight point Stoughton lead at halftime turned into a seven point Oliver Ames win by game's end, spoiling Stoughton's senior night.  With the 77-70 win, the Tigers improve to 10-6, clinching a spot in the postseason state tournament. The Black Knights, meanwhile, fall to 8-10, needing to win both of their final two games to make the playoffs.  Marcus Middleton, who entered the game 34 points from joining Stoughton's 1,000 point club, led the Black Knights, turning in a career-high 30 points, falling just short of the milestone.  "…

Bunce-Grenon Leads Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Past Canton

The Stoughton High boys' basketball team picked up a 61-55 win over Canton Wednesday at home, and are now two wins away from clinching a spot in the postseason with three games left to play.

Led by Joe Bunce-Grenon's 23 points and 16 rebounds, the Stoughton High boys' basketball team built a double-digit lead and held on for a 61-55 victory over Canton Wednesday at home.  With the win, Stoughton improves to 8-9, needing two wins in its final three regular season games to qualify for the state tournament. Canton falls to 6-11.  With Stoughton trailing 16-15 after a Sam Larson two-pointer midway through the second quarter, Bunce-Grenon took over the game for the remainder of the half, scoring 10 points in the final 3:35 of the second.  The senior captain ripped off eight straight points, including back-to-back three pointers, to turn a one-point deficit into a 23-16 Stoughton lead. Mauro Oliveira hit a three to extend the lead, …

Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Comes Back to Stun Foxborough in Overtime

Thanks to Mauro Oliveira's 3-pointer at the buzzer of regulation and Eddie Grant's 11 points in overtime, the Stoughton High School boys' basketball team picked up a much-needed win in Foxborough Thursday.

For three quarters, the Foxborough High School boys’ basketball team was in control, leading Stoughton 47-33 with eight minutes to go. Stoughton was a quarter from falling to 6-10, which would have pushed the Black Knights to the brink of postseason elimination with four games to go in the regular season. But Stoughton thrived on the urgency of the moment and applied an aggressive style of basketball absent through 24 minutes. The shift in momentum caught Foxborough off-balance. “I thought we went into a shell [in the fourth quarter],” said Foxborough head coach CJ Neely. “The way we played throughout the whole game was the way to beat them and we were the aggressor for 95 percent of the game but then in the last minute-and-a-half they …
