Stoughton Chamber Posthumously Honors Havlin; Recognizes Award Winners for Service

The Stoughton Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting and awards ceremony Jan. 7 at the New England Sinai Hospital. The award recipients all play important roles in helping the food pantries in town.

Giving back to the food pantries has been a focus of the Stoughton Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses be it through donations, helping to deliver food to the pantries, playing a key role in the annual Doin' It For Diane food pantry fundraiser, providing new shelving for the St. Anthony's Food Pantry, or even painting the exterior of the Ilse Marks Food Pantry. So, it is rather fitting that at the chamber's annual meeting, held at the New England Sinai Hospital's Brenner Conference Room Jan. 7, the group honored a number of individuals or businesses who have made a difference in the community, in part because of their work with the food pantries - Anne Havlin, Mark Snyder, Christine Gallagher, Jill O'Keefe, and Stop & Shop.  Anne…

ABOUT TOWN: Stoughton Mourns the Loss of Anne Havlin, Volunteer Extraordinaire

Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town. If you see or hear something we could use here, let us know by sending an e-mail to pmpco@aol.com.

STOUGHTON MOURNS ANNE HAVLIN: Stoughton lost one of its most dynamic citizens Monday night, November 5, with the death of Anne Havlin. Anne was the Director of the St. Anthony’s Free Market, a food pantry located inside the religious education department of Immaculate Conception Church. She had waged a three year battle against cancer, always wearing a smile, and the face of courage.   Her husband Tom told me that, “It ended the way she wanted it. She was surrounded by her children.” Tom also shared how important that Christmas was to Anne. She had already wrapped all of this year’s gifts for her husband, her four daughters, and her five grandchildren. He told me that Hospice had told him last Friday that the time was short, and if they …

Stoughton Chamber of Commerce, IKEA Stoughton Step up for St. Anthony's Food Pantry

Stoughton Chamber of Commerce member IKEA donated shelving to Stoughton's St. Anthony's Food Pantry last Thursday, and spent the day installing the units at the pantry, located on Park Ave.

The Stoughton Chamber of Commerce and its member businesses are known for supporting the Stoughton Food Pantries through its fundraising efforts such as the annual Doin’ It For Diane fundraiser. So the Chamber’s coordinated work with one of its Gold Members, IKEA-Stoughton, at the St. Anthony’s Food Pantry on Thursday, September 6 should come as no surprise. In fact, this project was a direct result of the Doin’ It For Diane Fundraiser. Christine Gallagher, manager of the St. Anthony’s Food Pantry on Park Ave., explained that when the funds were allocated from Doin' it For Diane between the two pantries (Ilse Marks and St. Anthony’s), each respective pantry was asked to provide a wish list.  Gallagher said her pantry “desperately needed …

Rotary Food Drive Benefits Stoughton and Sharon Families

The Ilse Marks Food Pantry in Stoughton will receive the non-perishables collected at Saturday's drive in Sharon.

Saturday morning, cans of vegetables, boxes of cereal, and bags of Doritos were brought near where visitors typically go to get books. Stoughton and Sharon families will benefit from these food donations. The Rotary Club of Sharon and the Interact Club at Sharon High School held this three-hour drive in the front of the Sharon Public Library on April 21.  The donations will go to the Ilse Marks Food Pantry, at 121 Seaver St. in Stoughton. The food pantry serves residents from both Stoughton and Sharon. Sharon Rotarian Julie Shuffain said that the food pantry is in need of donations after being depleted by the Passover and Easter Holidays and by April vacation, where children were home from school.  The Sharon Rotarians plan to build a …

Malcolm and Parsons Makes Sizable Donation to Stoughton's Food Pantries

The Stoughton insurance agency's three-month food drive benefits both of Stoughton's food pantries.

After running a food pantry drive this past December, January and February, Malcolm and Parsons Insurance Agency in downtown Stoughton was able to donate about 2,000 items to the two food pantries in town. Malcolm and Parsons also made a monetary donation of $2,000, with the Prone Family Foundation matching it, so both the Ilse Marks Food Pantry and the St. Anthony's Free Market were able to receive $2,000 each. The drive, organized by Jack Raeke and Jim Moran of Malcolm and Parsons, was motivated by the desire that “no family should ever go to bed hungry.” Raeke, Moran and Amne Parsons were on hand recently to present a check to Anne Havlin of St. Anthony's Free Market and Suzanne Blacker and Henrietta Polanzak of the Ilse Marks Pantry at…

RELIGIOUS MATERIAL DISTRIBUTED IN FIRST GRADE CLASS: Some parents of Gibbons School first graders in one classroom got a bit of a surprise earlier this week. A mom of a girl in one of the classes sent the kids home with "goody bags" in honor of her daughter's birthday. The bag contained a Children's My First Bible, A Jesus fish eraser, and a pencil that had erasers on both ends and was inscribed with the words, "Life without Jesus is like this pencil. No point to it." One parent, who wrote About Town, noted, "I am a Catholic, but I found it offensive. I can only imagine how any non-Christian parents would feel." School Principal Lynne Jardin sent home a letter to parents Thursday, Dec. 8 apologizing for the incident. She wrote, "It has …
