The following was submitted by the South Elementary School: Students at the South Elementary School in Stoughton recently participated in creating and visiting a Genre Poster Museum. As part of the South School MCAS Action Plan for ELA, teachers included the idea of creating genre posters as a way of increasing student awareness and understanding of the various literature genres. The posters were started on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 and finished after the new year. The Literacy Leadership Team of teachers accepted donated 4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets of foam board to display the posters in a faux museum. Our thanks to Steve Kramer of Camp Westwoods for the donation. 5th graders at the South School recently made the short walk to the Copley nursing home in Stoughton and sang holiday songs to the residents there.
5th graders at the South Elementary School made the short walk to the Copley nursing home on Sumner St. in Stoughton to provide some holiday cheer for the residents there, performing a holiday concert on Dec. 20. The students were accompanied by their music teacher Ms. Bauman, their teachers, Ms. Pires and Ms. Gabriels, principal Mrs. Mulvey, teaching assistant Mrs. Molin, reading specialist Mrs. Standring, and Stoughton Public Schools nursing director Mrs. Small. The Massachusetts School Building Authority did not approve Statements of Interest (SOI) for Stoughton High or the South Elementary School this cycle. School officials indicated the district will resubmit the SOIs in 2013.
The Stoughton School Department experienced a setback in the preliminary stages with its plans to start the potential replacement or renovation of Stoughton High School or the South Elementary School. The Stoughton Public Schools received official word Monday from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) that its Statement of Interests (SOI) filed for Stoughton High School and the South Elementary School will not be accepted this cycle. The MSBA has an upcoming January board meeting and neither SOI will be on the agenda, the school department announced in a press release Tuesday morning. State releases spring 2012 MCAS scores. See how Stoughton fared on the test in grades 3-10.
With the Spring 2012 MCAS scores for Massachusetts’ public schools being announced last week, the scores for the Stoughton Public Schools were discussed at the Sept. 26 Stoughton School Committee meeting. The test is administered in grades 3-8 and in grade 10. Third, fourth, sixth and seventh graders were tested in reading/English Language Arts and in mathematics. Fifth, eighth and tenth graders were tested in those two subjects, as well as in science and technology/engineering. The MCAS test is scored at the advanced level, proficient level, needs improvement level and warning/failing level. The Massachusetts School Building Authority's Board of Directors meet in October and November, at which time Stoughton will learn if its Statement of Interest for either Stoughton High or the South School has been accepted.
Statements of Interest (SOI) were filed with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) for both Stoughton High School and the South Elementary School back in January of this year, which is the first step in a lengthy process for replacing or renovating a school. The SOIs detailed numerous physical issues with both buildings. But a decision on either SOI has yet to be made, so the School Department is left to wait for a verdict. "The [School] Committee has done everything possible to present the best possible candidacy," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marguerite Rizzi said at the August 28 School Committee meeting. The Vocabulary Parade gave students in grades K-3 an opportunity to learn new words. Take a look at pictures in the photo gallery.
Students in grades kindergarten, first, second and third at the South Elementary School in Stoughton took part in a "Vocabulary Parade" last Thursday, May 24. The students made sandwich board posters with various vocabulary words on them and marched around the exterior of the school, with the fourth and fifth graders cheering on the younger students. Kindergarteners and first graders had posters with sight words; second graders had posters with science words; and third graders had posters with math words. The event was organized by the school's reading specialist, Joan Standring. A group of students, teachers and police officers took part in the 2012 Kathleen M. Bedrosian Scholarship Volleyball Tournament, held Friday evening, April 27 at Stoughton High. Kathleen “Kitty” Bedrosian, a beloved teacher at the South Elementary School, passed away in the spring of 2002 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. This tournament was named after Bedrosian to keep her memory alive in the town of Stoughton and help raise funds for the Stoughton Teachers’ Association scholarship fund. This year, three teams from Stoughton High, two from the O’Donnell Middle School and one each from the Stoughton Police Department as well as the South, Dawe, Gibbons and West Elementary Schools took part in the tournament. Students at the South Elementary School in Stoughton enjoyed a birds of prey program, getting an up-close look at different kinds of owls, as well as a falcon.
Second graders in Barbara Mills and Jess Rosenthal’s classes at Stoughton’s South School got an up-close look at some of the birds they had been studying in their owl unit when Jim Parks, a licensed raptor rehabilitator, visited the elementary school the Friday before April vacation. Parks brought along some birds of prey—a few owls like the Great horned owl and the tiny saw-whet owl, as well as a peregrine falcon—to show the students. The students were eager to share their knowledge about birds. The birds Parks showed the students the afternoon on April 13 had all been injured at some point and had gone through rehabilitation. The contest asked students in grades 5-8 to discuss why they are “proud to pledge allegiance to our flag.”
Three fifth graders from the South Elementary School in Stoughton have received local honors in the National Elks Americanism Essay Contest. In their essays, Andrew Chiang, Olivia O’Neil and Molly Turner had to discuss what the Pledge of Allegiance means to them and why they are proud to pledge allegiance to the flag. Chiang, O’Neil and Turner shared their winning essays with members of the Stoughton School Committee, as well as with Superintendent Dr. Marguerite Rizzi and Deputy Superintendent Jonathan Ford at a March 13 School Committee meeting.
