ABOUT TOWN: One Crazy Weekend in Stoughton (And 'Master Planning' for a Busy Monday)

Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town. If you see or hear something we could use here, let us know by sending an e-mail to pmpco@aol.com.

A CRAZY WEEKEND IN STOUGHTON:  About Town put a lot of miles on my sneakers this past weekend, running around to cover the plethora of events in town, like the open houses at the Fire Station and YMCA; the magic show at the library; the South School Pumpkin Patch; and the Rummage Sale at Ahavath Torah.  So, check out my quick synopsis and the photos that accompany them! OPEN HOUSE at FREEMAN FIRE STATION: Residents of Stoughton got to take tours of the (dilapidated) Freeman Street Fire Station in the downtown on Saturday.  Kids got to hang in a fire truck and also got to enjoy free pizza compliments of Papa Gino's in Stoughton.  All the children got a plastic fire helmet to bring home.  Firemen (and women) are heroes, and even the children…

Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town. If you see or hear something we could use here, let us know by sending an e-mail to pmpco@aol.com.

OLIVE GARDEN PAYS HOMAGE TO DISABLED VETERAN VOLUNTEERS:  Eric Watson who came back in March from serving 13 months for the Army National Guard in Afghanistan, is a manager of Olive Garden in Stoughton. Watson, himself a disabled veteran, wanted to do something to help recognize the sacrifice of volunteers who donate their time to help disabled veterans. Watson, who suffers from PTSD and heart valve issues from his service to our country, spoke with his general manager, Steven Brodher, and got approval to hold a dinner for volunteers who help disabled veterans on Oct. 11. Olive Garden's parent company has run disability nentor days for volunteers from organizations for the disabled. Volunteers from Stoughton, Randolph, and Weymouth enjoyed…

5 Things, October 12: Freeze Warning Issued for Stoughton Area

Five Things You Need to Know Today: Freeze Warning Issued for Stoughton Area; Stoughton High Volleyball to "Dig for a Cure"; South Elementary School Pumpkin Patch; and more...

"Five Things you Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. 1. Freeze Warning Issued for Stoughton Area With temperatures forecast to drop below freezing in the overnight hours Friday into Saturday, the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for the area, in effect from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. Below freezing temperatures and widespread frost will kill sensitive vegetation, and it should deal a blow to the mosquito population, curbing the EEE threat many towns in the area have dealt with since July. Temperatures will reach the low to mid-50s Friday, with temperatures falling to the low 30s in the overnight hours. The high is expected to be in the…

South School Fifth Grader is Principal for the Day

Andrew Chiang won a raffle at the school’s Pumpkin Patch to be the principal for the day. He gave the students extra recess and shadowed full-time principal Maureen Mulvey on Wednesday of this week.

Andrew Chiang skipped class on Wednesday and spent much of the day in the principal’s office. But the fifth grader at the South School wasn’t in trouble. He was the principal—for the day. Chiang won a raffle drawing to be principal for the day at the South School’s Pumpkin Patch on Sunday, Oct. 23. He spent the following Wednesday, Oct. 26, shadowing full-time principal Maureen Mulvey and seeing what the job entailed—everything from greeting parents and students at drop-off to analyzing MCAS scores. Chiang said the experience was “really awesome.” “My friends were really surprised and the teachers called me Mr. Chiang,” he said. As most elementary school children might do if made principal for the day, Chiang gave the students extra recess…

Photo Gallery: South School Pumpkin Patch

Highlights from the South School Pumpkin Patch, held Sunday, Oct. 23.

Hundreds of parents and students turned out at the South School’s Pumpkin Patch Fall Festival, held this past Sunday. There were dozens of games and prizes, food, raffles, a pumpkin decorating station, a cakewalk, a silent auction, and a haunted house. Vendors from the area set up shop in the cafeteria; there was a hayride, a moonwalk, and the DPW, police, fire and local businesses like MAXX Training Center and Elite Health & Fitness had trucks, cruisers and other assorted vehicles for fairgoers to check out.  Take a look at highlights from the well-attended PTO fundraiser for the South School in the photo gallery above.  Have any photos from the Pumpkin Patch you would like to share? Email them to jeffrey.pickette@patch.com or upload them…
