Photos from around Stoughton during Thursday and Friday's lingering snowstorm, which unexpectedly brought about two feet of snow.
Take a look at photos from the latest snowstorm, which blanketed Stoughton Thursday and Friday. Pictures were taken Friday afternoon, March 8. As late as Wednesday afternoon, forecasts indicated this area would see a lingering winter storm last all of Thursday and into Friday afternoon, but the total snowfall would be minimal - maybe 1 to 3 inches. While the timing of the storm has stayed the same - the storm did not wind down until the late afternoon hours on Friday - the predicted snow totals were way off. Updates from the latest snowstorm, which is expected to last throughout Thursday and into Friday afternoon.
SNOWFALL TOTALS Based on nearby snowfall totals posted by the National Weather Service, the Stoughton area has received about 2 feet of snow. POWER OUTAGES National Grid is reporting 921 outages in town (about 7.4 percent of the town's customers) as of 5 p.m. on March 8. More than 800 of these outages are in a large pocket which includes parts of Park St. (Prospect St. to the center), Central St. (Pearl St. to Lincoln St.), Pleasant St. (just beyond Central St. to the center) and Washington St. (Canton line to the center). Projected snowfall totals for this weekend's snowstorm have been significantly reduced.
How much snow will Stoughton get from this weekend's storm? Not as much as originally forecasted. What was at first thought to be a more significant storm when the first snowfall projections were made earlier this week, will now be rather insignificant, at least according to the most recent forecasts. WBZ is projecting most of southeastern Massachusetts, including Stoughton, to get between 1 to 3 inches of snow. WCVB Channel 5 also projects 1-3 inches. 7 News has the Stoughton area near the boarder of getting 2 to 4 inches of snow and just 1 to 2. FOX 25 projects a bit more snow, 2 to 4 inches, but has Stoughton near an area receiving 4 to 6 inches. Still, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for this area …

Meteorologists are projecting Friday's storm will produce as much as 2 feet of snow for much of Massachusetts, including Stoughton. This area is under a blizzard warning, according to the National Weather Service.
Almost 35-years to the day of the anniversary of the Blizzard of '78, the Boston area is expected to get walloped by another snowstorm, which may drop as much as a foot or two of snow this Friday into Saturday. Local meteorologists are projecting about 2 feet of snow for the Boston area, including Stoughton. This area is under a blizzard warning, from Friday morning until Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. WHDH Channel 7 projects 16-24 inches for this storm, with isolated areas getting around 30 inches; WCVB Channel 5 projects 12-24 inches; WBZ Channel 4 projects 18-24+ inches, with some areas getting as much as 30 inches; and FOX 25 projects more than a foot. Let's face it - it's been a few years since a snowstorm has truly walloped the area, despite several inches in a recent storm. On top of that, the National Weather Service is predicting that local residents can expect high temperatures to stay in the mid-40s for the rest of the week and the New England Patriots may end up playing their rematch with the Houston Texans in sunny, 50-degree weather. Pictures of the first measurable snowfall of the winter season in Stoughton.
Stoughton picked up its first measurable snowfall of the 2012-2013 winter season with a storm which swept through the region Saturday afternoon into early Sunday morning. And children and families were taking full advantage of the snow on the ground, with dozens seen sledding at Chemung Hill behind the Hansen Elementary School Sunday morning. A second storm is headed to the area and could make driving hazardous on Saturday.
A second storm of the week is headed toward New England and will dump more snow onto the area on Saturday. Projected snowfall amounts continue to fluctuate, but most models have the Stoughton area receiving about a half-foot of snow, if not more. 7News meteorologists are predicting Stoughton to get as much as 7 to 10 inches of snow in the storm that is expected to start on Saturday afternoon and spread into the early hours of Sunday (Stoughton is near the boarder of the 7 to 10 inch pocket and 4 to 7 inch area). Likewise, WBZ is predicting 6 to 10 inches. AccuWeather.com long-range meteorologists are projecting a weak to moderate El Niño by late summer, which could mean more snow this winter.
It's not even winter yet - in fact fall doesn't begin until September 22 - but Accuweather.com reports that unlike last winter, students (and teachers) can expect more snow days this winter. Despite a rare snowstorm last October, the winter of 2011-2012 was mild and relatively snowless. There were no snow days in Stoughton (the Gibbons School was closed on January 20 due to a water main break) and the 180th school day came on the earliest possible date as a result - June 19, 2012. It was a stark contrast from the winter of 2010-2011 where the area saw one big snowstorm after another and Stoughton used five snow days by February 2, 2011.
