Shayla Lutz, 3, of Stoughton, died following a tragic accident on Sept. 14 when she was struck by a box truck in front of the Hansen School. In looking to address safety concerns, adding a crossing guard would not be an adequate solution, officials say.
Town officials have been looking into what can be done to address safety concerns following the tragic death of Shayla Lutz, a three-year-old Stoughton girl who was struck by a box truck in front of the Hansen Elementary School on Central St. in Stoughton the afternoon of Sept. 14. Stoughton Police Chief Paul Shastany and Executive Officer Robert Devine appeared at a Hansen School PTO meeting Monday night; a team of engineers was at the Hansen School on Tuesday to observe the dismissal process from start to finish; and a meeting with town officials (not open to the public) has been organized by Interim Town Manager Joseph Feaster for this week to further examine this issue, School Committee Chair Deborah Sovinee said. “When the principal…

More than 150 people attended a candlelight vigil for Shayla Lutz, who died following a tragic accident on Sept. 14 when she was struck by a box truck in front of the Hansen School.
Drive by the Hansen Elementary School on Central St. in Stoughton and you will see two poignant reminders of the tragic accident on the afternoon of Sept. 14 which resulted in the death of Shayla Lutz, the 3-year-old struck by a box truck as she crossed the street with her mother. One is a cross with an abundance of stuffed animals and flowers all placed in her memory by the crosswalk sign just past the Central St. driveway to the school. The other are the words 'WE SHARE OUR SORROW,' on the school display board. By hosting a candlelight vigil last Friday evening, Sept. 21, the Hansen School P.T.O. put action behind those very words. Richard Fontenarosa Richard J. Fontenarosa, 67, a resident of Avon, died peacefully at home on Saturday, September 8. He was the husband of 21 years of Maureen A. McCauley. Son of the late Joseph R. and Eva M. (Sass) Fontenarosa, he was born in Quincy, graduated from Stoughton High School and also attended Massasoit Community College. He was a resident of Stoughton for 40 years before moving to Avon in 1986. Mr. Fontenarosa was a firefighter in Stoughton for over 20 years before retiring 7 years ago. He also owned Fontenarosa Trucking for over 30 years. He was a car and motorcycle enthusiast. In addition to his wife, Mr. Fontenarosa is survived by his sister, Marie Allberry and her husband Dale of Wareham, as well as several nieces and …

The vigil will be held this Friday, September 21 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hansen School field, behind the building. Candles will be provided. As a former Stoughton homeowner, all I can say to the parents is, "please DO NOT" entrust the safety of your children to the town planners and committees. Keep this issue in the forefront or they will eventually bury it. Do not let them keep giving you excuses as to why these things take so long! Insist that they act now and keep the media involved when they choose to ignore your concerns.   more ›
