Massachusetts native Gina McCarthy is President Obama's nominee to become next administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. She was Stoughton's first town Environmental Officer in the 1980s.
President Barack Obama's nominee to become next administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, Gina McCarthy, started her career locally, first in neighboring Canton, and then here in Stoughton as this town's first Environmental Officer. Obama announced during a Monday morning press conference, from the East Room in the White House, that he nominated McCarthy to lead the EPA. She is currently the Assistant Administrator for the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. McCarthy grew up in Canton and has degrees from UMass Boston and Tufts University, according to her bio on the Connecticut State website. Holding their third and final debate at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida Monday night, President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney both took one last opportunity convince voters why they should support either candidate. The topic of Monday night's debate focused on Foreign Policy. Tuesday morning, Patch will have flash survey results from Massachusetts political activists and leaders, both Republican and Democratic. Reporting/Writing by Bryan McGonigle, Dan Libon, Jeffrey Pickette and Mary Ann Barton: The Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision Thursday morning to uphold the Affordable Care Act, other wise known as "Obamacare," declaring its individual mandate to be constitutional. The argument against the constitutionality of the individual mandate had been that it violated states' rights, but proponents cited the Constitution's commerce clause as justification. However the court seems to have found a way around the argument, ruling that the mandate was constitutional anyway under Congress's ability to tax.
