Gallery: Stoughton Public Library Hosts Passover Seder

As part of the Stoughton Reads Together Program, the Stoughton Public Library recently hosted a Passover Seder. Take a look at pictures from the Seder in the media gallery.

About 50 people gathered in the Wales French Room of the Stoughton Public Library last Wednesday for an early celebration of Passover as part of a Stoughton Reads Together event. The eight-day Jewish holiday officially starts at sundown on Monday, March 25 and commemorates the story of Moses and "the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt," according to Chabad.org.  Passover is marked by a Seder on the first two nights, "a fifteen-step family-oriented tradition and ritual-packed feast," including the reciting of the Haggadah, which "describes in detail the story of the Exodus from Egypt," according to Chabad.org. Stoughton Public Library trustee Harvey Levensohn led the March 20 Seder at the Library, which was …

Patch Recipes: Passover-Safe Baked Goods

One can eat only so much matzah for eight days.

Monday night marks the start of one of the most important Jewish holidays—Passover. It is a celebration of the ancient Israelites' exodus from Egypt and slavery. Passover lasts seven to eight days and a special meal called a Seder takes place on the first two nights (first night only in Israel). It is a time for family and friends to gather around the dinner table and read the story of Passover, observe certain traditions and sing songs, while also enjoying good food and each other's company. During Passover, observant Jews avoid eating any leavened bread-based products. This is because in the Passover story, the Israelites were in such a rush to get out of Egypt, they did not have time to let their bread rise. The substitute for bread is …

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO A PASSOVER BRUNCH! OK. I admit it. I'm no a matzoh kind of guy. Passover, which does have great meaning to the Jewish people, never thrilled me. While everyone else at school was eating peanut butter and jelly in Wonder Bread, I had these dried out large tasteless crackers with peanut butter and jelly.   But, I've grown up some! Eight years ago I went to a Passover Jazz Brunch and REALLY enjoyed it. The delicious eggs they managed to weave with the matzoh helped, and so did the abundance of other delicious foods, and the music!  I've discovered since then that music and delicious breakfast will go hand in hand once again at Stoughton's Ahavath Torah Congregation's Eighth Annual Passover Jazz Brunch (and it could be …

A MODEL MATZAH EXPERIENCE! Two groups of local children participated in a hands-on pre-Passover experience at the Model Matzah Factory at Shaloh House Chabad in Stoughton.  The children re-enacted the process of manufacturing Matzah, from grinding the flour to kneading the dough, to baking the Matzahs, all within 18 minutes; the time limit in which Matzah must be made. Rabbi Mendel Gurkow of Shaloh House Chabad of the South Area facilitated the interactive program. Both groups of children; local elementary age children who attend the Shaloh House Sunday Hebrew School and preschoolers from the Shaloh House Preschool, listened and learned before donning official “Matzah Bakery Hats,” taking their own freshly mixed dough, rolling it flat, …
