Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Falls Short Against OA on Senior Night

The Stoughton High boys' basketball team fell 77-70 Friday night. The Black Knights are now 8-10 and need to win their last two games in order to qualify for the postseason.

After shooting 51.4 percent (18 for 35) in the first half of Friday's game against Oliver Ames, the Stoughton High boys' basketball team shot just 21.4 percent (9 for 42) in the third and fourth quarters as an eight point Stoughton lead at halftime turned into a seven point Oliver Ames win by game's end, spoiling Stoughton's senior night.  With the 77-70 win, the Tigers improve to 10-6, clinching a spot in the postseason state tournament. The Black Knights, meanwhile, fall to 8-10, needing to win both of their final two games to make the playoffs.  Marcus Middleton, who entered the game 34 points from joining Stoughton's 1,000 point club, led the Black Knights, turning in a career-high 30 points, falling just short of the milestone.  "…

Stoughton High Boys' Basketball Can't Overcome Early Deficit at Oliver Ames

The Tigers built an early lead and never looked back, as they defeated the visiting Black Knights, 74-62, Friday night.

Oliver Ames and the Stoughton High boys' basketball team met three times last year, with two of the games resulting in blowout wins for the Black Knights, including a Division 2 South Sectional semifinal state tournament playoff game. On Friday evening, both squads squared off for the first time in roughly 10 months, and this time the Tigers managed to construct a lead, which they never relinquished, and went onto defeat the Black Knights, 74-62. Stoughton drops a key Hockomock League Davenport Division contest, falling to 4-6 on the season, while OA improves to 6-4. Nick Cidado paced the Tigers with 14 points; Andrew Reardon tallied 13 points, while St. Clair Ryan and Ryan Carney each recorded 12 points. “This was a good win for us,” said…

Oliver Ames No Match for Stoughton High Boys’ Basketball—Black Knights Cruise to Sectional Finals

Stoughton beat OA 68-42 Tuesday evening in Brockton in a Division 2 South Sectional semifinal contest. The Black Knights now advance to play Hopkinton in the Sectional finals on Saturday.

At the end of a Sunday afternoon practice on March 4, Stoughton head coach John Gallivan talked to his team about the importance of making big plays in key moments.  If Stoughton was able to do this Tuesday against Oliver Ames, the Black Knights would win. But if the team faltered, the players would be turning in their uniforms and the season would end. The Black Knights responded with perhaps their most dominating victory of the season. Tied at 13 with 1:20 left in the first quarter, the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team went on a 12-0 run to close out the first and start the second, taking a 25-13 lead.  And they never looked back. Stoughton came away with a 68-42 win, cruising past archrival Oliver Ames Tuesday night at Brockton High…

Let's Make a Deal: Vote on What Patch Editors Will Wager on Stoughton/OA Basketball Game

What Stoughton commodity should Stoughton Patch wager on the game?

In anticipation of Tuesday night’s Division 2 South Sectional Semifinal matchup between the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team and Oliver Ames, your Stoughton Patch editor and Easton Patch Editor Pat Maguire are making a friendly wager on the game. Stoughton and Oliver Ames have played some classic games over the years—including overtime and quadruple overtime tilts last school year (both Stoughton wins). This regular season, the Black Knights and Tigers have split their two meetings, with the home team winning both games. This will be the fifth postseason meeting between the two Hockomock League rival schools since 2005, with both teams winning two games a piece. If Stoughton wins, Pat will treat me to something in Easton. But If OA …

OA Boys' Basketball Upsets Stoughton

Tigers put together a complete game effort to out-battle the Davenport Division leading Black Knights.

Oliver Ames boys' basketball coach Don Byron knew that to beat the 13-1 Stoughton Black Knights, the Tigers would have to play well in all phases of the game. His team didn't miss a beat. Offensively, defensively, on the glass and from the free-throw line, everything clicked for the Tigers in their 75-67 Davenport Division win Tuesday at Oliver Ames High School on the Tigers’ Senior Night. With the win, OA improved to 10-5 (4-2 Davenport) and qualified for the MIAA tournament. The win snapped OA’s four game losing streak to Stoughton, which dated back to the 2009-2010 season. "That was terrific end to end on both ends of the floor," Byron said. "I thought defensively, while [Stoughton guard Aaron] Calixte got his 24 [points], he had to …
