"Five Things you Need to Know Today" is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. 1. New Year's Trash Schedule Trash collection will take place as regularly scheduled on New Year's Eve, Monday, Dec. 31. However, Tuesday, Jan. 1, there will be no curbside trash pickup in observance of New Year's Day. Trash collection will instead be scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 2 in addition to the regular Wednesday collections. All rubbish and recyclables must be curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Christmas Trees (with bags and stands removed) may be left curbside on your regular RECYCLING collection day and will be picked up by a separate truck during January only. This is the only method of disposal. …

The following is a press release from MassDOT: The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) asks travelers during the upcoming New Year's holiday weekend to plan ahead, drive safely, and use public transportation where possible.  To encourage safe travel, the MBTA will offer free service after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and free coffee will be served overnight on New Year’s Eve at service plazas along major roadways. “We ask all travelers visiting family and friends or celebrating the New Year at First Night in Boston or other activities to enjoy the holiday weekend safely by choosing a designated driver if necessary or taking advantage of public transportation,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. AROUND AND ABOUT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL: It's a field trip I'd like to take. The O'Donnell Middle School recently had students from Mr. Lau's Mandarin class go to the Cheng-Du Restaurant. Students only spoke in Mandarin while they were there.  A great learning experience was had by all.  Sounds delicious!  In other OMS news, O'Donnell Middle School's Peer Leaders, and their adviser Mrs. Coughlan, attended the StandUp 2011 Conference Against Bullying at Northeastern University earlier this week.
