Here's the list of what is open and closed in Massachusetts on New Year’s Day this year, Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013: Open (at owner's discretion): Closed: No Trash Collection on New Year's Day in Stoughton Tuesday, Jan. 1, there will be no curbside trash pickup in observance of New Year's Day. Trash collection will instead be scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 2 in addition to the regular Wednesday collections. All rubbish and recyclables must be curbside by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Christmas Trees (with bags and stands removed) may be left curbside on your regular RECYCLING collection day and will be picked up by a separate truck during January only. One theory about how Santa gets all his work done is: Coffee. Lots of it. Even if you're not St. Nick, if you need to stay alert driving on Christmas night, the state's highway service areas are here to help. All 18 Department of Transportation service plazas will serve up free java from 10 p.m. on Dec. 25 to 5 a.m. on Dec. 26. The same offer applies on New Year's Eve. That's between 10 p.m. Dec. 31 and 5 a.m. Jan. 1 The free coffee is sponsored by McDonalds, Burger King and Gulf. Here is a list of all 18 service plazas in Massachusetts.

New Year’s Day was celebrated on Jan. 1, but since the holiday fell on a Sunday this year, it is being observed on Monday, Jan 2. Therefore many government offices and banks will be closed. Here's the list of what is open and closed in Massachusetts on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012: Open: Closed: No Trash Pickup in Stoughton on Jan. 2.
