STOUGHTON MOURNS THE LOSS OF JERRY SAVAGE: Personally, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Jerald S. Savage, a CPA with Wallace, Savage & Davis in Stoughton. He died Wednesday, August 29. Jerry Savage was a vice chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and was the campaign treasurer for former selectman John Anderson’s campaign. Savage was a financial wizard who helped to save Curry College, and did the same for New England Sinai Hospital. He and his lovely wife Sheryl, Executive Director of College Advancement at Massasoit Community College in Canton, were very active at Ahavath Torah Congregation (where he served as President), and were very generous with their time and funds for many local charities. In addition to his bride, …

A look at the top headlines in your town and the surrounding area for the week of August 5, 2012.
2,800-Mile Takeout Run: Mississippi Man Returns Home with 250 Pizzas from Stoughton's Town Spa Most people have a favorite pizza place. For David Schuler his is Town Spa in Stoughton, about 1,400 miles away from his Madison, Mississippi home. But that doesn't prevent Schuler, a Stoughton native, from enjoying a slice (or more) of his favorite hometown pizza. Schuler made headlines last August when he drove from his home in Madison, Miss. (north of Jackson, Miss.) to Town Spa and back again to pick up an order of 150 pizzas. He upped the ante this year by placing an order of 250 pizzas. After enjoying lunch at the Stoughton restaurant August 11, he packed up his car with six coolers full of pizza and began his journey back home to …

After finding more EEE positive mosquito pools, the state is conducting another round of aerial spraying in six towns near Stoughton.
Once again, EEE was found in mosquitoes in neighboring Easton, so the state is stepping into action. More findings of positive pools in Easton have led the Department of Public Health to announce plans for another round of aerial spraying in Easton and five other towns near Stoughton - Bridgewater, Norton, Raynham, Taunton, and West Bridgewater. As a result, the risk for EEE has been raised from "high" to "critical" (the highest risk level) in Bridgewater, Easton, Raynham, and Taunton; and from “moderate” to “high” in Norton and West Bridgewater. What does this mean for Stoughton? It's another reminder EEE is still an issue in the area. But, the risk level for mosquito-borne illness in Stoughton is still "moderate." No mosquitoes have …

Seven EEE-infected mosquito pools found just this week in neighboring Easton.
Easton Health Agent Mark Taylor said Wednesday that a total of seven positive pools of EEE mammal-biting mosquitoes have been identified in neighboring Easton just this week. Two pools tested positive on Monday and five more tested positive on Wednesday. The discovery coincides with reports that mosquito populations are down 60 percent in communities where aerial spraying occurred two weekends ago, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. What does this mean for Stoughton? It's another reminder that while mosquito populations are down, EEE is still very prevalent in the area as indicated by the recent findings. The state recommends towns in "high risk" areas to curtail outdoor evening activities for the remainder of the …

Stoughton was not on the list of towns to be sprayed, but the nearby towns of Easton, Norton, Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, Raynham and Taunton were part of this spraying effort. Mammal-biting mosquitoes have recently tested positive for EEE in both Easton and Canton. No mosquitoes have tested positive for EEE in Stoughton. While the risk level for mosquito-borne illness in Easton and Canton is “high,” the risk level in Stoughton remains "moderate," according to …

For anyone concerned about the process here is how it works: They spray at night, and early morning before the sun comes up to get the adult mosquitoes. After the sun comes up, the spray evaporates when sunlight hits it. The NCMC implied that the process happens very quickly, so that the fields should be safe shortly after dawn depending on tree coverage and so on.   more ›
