The following is from a release from the office of U.S. Senator William “Mo” Cowan (D-Mass.): Interim U.S. Senator William “Mo” Cowan (D-Mass.) voted Tuesday to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, a bill that would help to prevent violent crimes against women. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 78-22. Senator Cowan, a Stoughton resident, co-sponsored the legislation Thursday, the day he was sworn into office. The final bill, along with its amendments, were his first votes as a member of the United States Senate. “I applaud the passage of this important legislation. Stoughton Woman Gives Birth at Randolph Fire Station A Stoughton woman in labor ended up giving birth to a baby girl at Randolph's main fire station Wednesday morning, WCVB.com reports. The woman's husband was driving her to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, but the new mom's labor pains were so severe that the husband didn't think they would make it to the hospital before the baby was born so the couple stopped at the Randolph fire station, Randolph Firefighter Steve Glassman said, according to WCVB.com. Cowan, a Stoughton resident, was sworn in as Massachusetts' junior U.S. Senator by Vice President Joe Biden on Feb. 7.
U.S. Senator William "Mo" Cowan was sworn into office a few minutes after 12 p.m. on Thursday by Vice President Joe Biden on the floor of the Senate. Cowan, a Stoughton resident, was appointed last week to be interim Senator by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Cowan is taking the place of former Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, who became Secretary of State - serving until a new senator is elected in the June 25 special election. Cowan was the former Chief of Staff for Governor Patrick, before accepting this interim Senate appointment. Prior to his role as Chief of Staff, he also served as chief legal counsel to Governor Patrick, having served in the Patrick-Murray Administration since 2009. Newly elected Massachusetts Senator …

But, Stoughton Historical Society president Dwight MacKerron, says that once upon a time Canton was in Stoughton. “We used to be one town so we have a substantial shared past,” he told About Town. (Stoughton became a town in 1726 with Canton splitting from Stoughton and becoming its own town in 1797). "Several Shots" Fired on Rayburn Road in Stoughton Monday Night Stoughton Police received multiple calls Monday, Jan. 28 around 10:15 p.m. about hearing gunshots in the vicinity of Rayburn Road in Stoughton. Police officers responded and found a parked vehicle and the home had been hit by bullets, according to the entry in the police log. No one was hit and there were no injuries. There are no suspects at this time, according to police. While Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston) isn’t expected to make a formal announcement until later Thursday afternoon, a new Stephen Lynch for Senate Facebook page popped up this morning with a link to a “Stephen Lynch for US Senate Announcement” YouTube video that announces Lynch’s Senate candidacy. Earlier in the morning, the Stephen Lynch for Congress Facebook page had posted a message directing people to the newly created Senate page for news “on today’s plans and schedule.” Lynch is expected to make an announcement at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Ironworkers Local 7 Hall in South Boston. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced Wednesday morning that a Stoughton resident is headed to the Nation's Capital to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate. With Tuesday's official nomination of U.S. Senator John Kerry to the post of Secretary of State, the field is opening up with folks vying for Kerry's seat in his unexpired term in the U.S. Senate. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced Tuesday that his current Chief of Staff William “Mo” Cowan, a Stoughton resident, will be stepping down in January 2013, returning to the private sector. Foxborough native Brendan Ryan, who is now the administration's Director of Communications, will take over from Cowan, who has held the job since January 2011. As chief of staff, Cowan, 43, helped oversee the historic health care cost containment law and the Expanded Gaming Act, according to a press release from the Governor's office.
