"Operation Blue Lights" will be back in effect this holiday weekend, with extra patrols on Route 24.
This Memorial Day weekend, "Operation Blue Lights" will be back in effect in southeastern Massachusetts, State Police announced Thursday. According to WPRO News, "State Police will deploy 100 additional troopers across Southeastern Massachusetts over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend. It is an effort to curb accidents and fatalities, and to enforce traffic laws, said Major Anthony Thomas, Commander of Troop D, which patrols all of Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands." The arrest came during a State Police run sobriety checkpoint Friday on Neponset St. in Canton.
A Stoughton woman was arrested Friday in Canton for allegedly driving drunk, according to a press release from the Massachusetts State Police. The State Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Neponset Street in Canton April 5, resulting in the arrest of six people for OUI alcohol and drugs with two criminal summons, according to the release. State Police also issued 88 civil motor vehicle citations. Mia Cancel, 46, of Stoughton, was charged with OUI liquor. Those arrested during the sobriety checkpoint in Canton were expected to appear in Stoughton District Court on Monday, according to the release. State Police also conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Route 3A in Lowell on April 6, resulting in the arrest of 12 people for OUI.

Colonel Timothy P. Alben, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, announced a sobriety checkpoint will be established on an undisclosed public way in Norfolk County from Friday, April 5 into Saturday, April 6. The following is adapted from a Massachusetts State Police Press release: Massachusetts State Police arrested a man late Sunday night on gun and drug charges following a stop on Route 24 in Stoughton. At approximately 11:10 p.m. on March 24, State Police Trooper Kevin MacDermott was headed home from a paid detail on Route 24 southbound in Stoughton when he observed a vehicle with an invalid safety inspection sticker. Trooper MacDermott observed the vehicle move over into the far left lane and accelerate up to 90-95 mph before he was able to stop the vehicle in Stoughton. Massachusetts State Police and local police departments will be out this holiday weekend looking for drunk, impaired and dangerous drivers.
Drunk driving arrests by Massachusetts State Police increased by 30 percent or more than 1,100 drivers, Massachusetts State Police Superintendent Colonel Timothy Allen said at a press conference outside of Massachusetts State Police headquarters in Framingham Friday morning. As of Dec. 27, 2012 Massachusetts State Police had arrested 4,866 individuals and charged them with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. In 2011, Massachusetts State Police arrested 3,728 individuals. The Massachusetts State Police increased patrols on Route 24 and ran a sobriety checkpoint in Norfolk County this Thanksgiving weekend, which resulted in a number of OUI arrests, other offenses and hundreds of citations.
Massachusetts State Police Troopers made 20 OUI arrests and issued almost 350 citations on area roadways this holiday weekend - the result of increased patrols on Routes 24 and 195 and a sobriety checkpoint in Canton, according to a press release from the MSP. The State Police deployed increased patrols on Routes 24 and 195 in southeastern Massachusetts, the evenings of Friday, Nov. 23 and Saturday, Nov. 24 as "part of the department’s ongoing efforts to curb impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving on those roads," the MSP stated in a press release.
