Stoughton beat OA 68-42 Tuesday evening in Brockton in a Division 2 South Sectional semifinal contest. The Black Knights now advance to play Hopkinton in the Sectional finals on Saturday.
At the end of a Sunday afternoon practice on March 4, Stoughton head coach John Gallivan talked to his team about the importance of making big plays in key moments. If Stoughton was able to do this Tuesday against Oliver Ames, the Black Knights would win. But if the team faltered, the players would be turning in their uniforms and the season would end. The Black Knights responded with perhaps their most dominating victory of the season. Tied at 13 with 1:20 left in the first quarter, the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team went on a 12-0 run to close out the first and start the second, taking a 25-13 lead. For the fifth time in seven seasons, the Stoughton and Oliver Ames boys’ basketball teams will meet in the postseason. This year a trip to the sectional finals will be on the line. The Black Knights and Tigers will square off Tuesday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at Brockton High in a Division 2 South Sectional semifinal game. Stoughton and OA split their previous two meetings in the regular season, with each school defending its home court. The winner of this sectional semifinal game will advance to play the winner of the other D2 South semifinal matchup between Hopkinton and Wellesley. Trailing by as much as 18, the SHS girls’ basketball team came back, took the lead, but couldn’t hold it down the stretch, as Newton North secured a 49-45 win in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional tournament.
Midway through the second quarter, the Stoughton High girls’ basketball team trailed Newton North 32-14 in a game that looked like the Tigers would put away by halftime. But the Black Knights went to a press defense and went on a 23-3 run, tying the game at 35 with 1:51 left in the third and taking the lead a little more than a minute later on a Chrystal Holland layup. Stoughton trailed by one, 38-37, going into the fourth, but held a 45-42 lead with 3:42 left to play. The Stoughton/OA game will be airing on SMAC this Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. on channel 9 (Comcast) and channel 28 (Verizon). Also, important info for Saturday's Sectional final basketball game between SHS and Hopkinton: Game tickets are $7 for students/$10 for adults. The fee to park is $6.
