2013 Stoughton High Spring Sports Preview: Looking at the baseball team, which returns a talented and experienced core from last season.
Players, coaches and fans of the Stoughton High baseball team are deeming this to be "the year" for their local nine. After making it to the MIAA state tournament last season, the Knights return a strong core of talented seniors and juniors who have varsity experience under their belt. Stoughton returns the majority of its roster, and this experience is something the Knights will look to use to their advantage this upcoming spring. If the Knights can stay consistent offensively, something they had trouble with last year, this year's team will be one of the favorites to come away with the Davenport Division crown and make a deep run in the state tournament. The SHS ice hockey team received the James F. Mulloy Team Sportsmanship Award at a special ceremony at the TD Garden on March 17, the second straight year the program has been honored for its high level of sportsmanship.
For the second consecutive season the Stoughton High Hockey program was honored at the T.D. Garden, home of the Boston Bruins, for playing the game in an exemplary manner, winning the James F. Mulloy Team Sportsmanship Award. The award was presented to Stoughton High, represented by head hockey coach Dan Mark, Principal Julie Miller, and team captains Cory Greenblatt (senior), P.J. Sheehan (junior) and Brandon Lima (junior), Sunday, March 17, on the Garden ice, prior to the start of the MIAA Division 1A high school championship game. Stoughton fell 70-46 at Braintree Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 South Sectional Tournament. The Black Knights end the season with a 14-8 record.
The Stoughton High girls' basketball team went into Friday night's tournament game as the consensus underdog, traveling to Braintree, last season's Division 1 South Sectional Champion. And while the Black Knights lost, 70-46, in what appears to be a lopsided margin, they were no easy out - Stoughton kept the game close throughout the first half, and even when the team fell behind by double digits in the second half, fought back. After trailing by as much as 17 with 3:16 left in the third quarter, Stoughton went on a 12-4 run to end the third and start the fourth. The 10th seeded Stoughton High girls' basketball team scored a 42-35 win at #7 Plymouth South in the first round of the MIAA Division 1 South Sectional Tournament Wednesday night, advancing to play #2 Braintree on Friday.

The postseason starts for the Stoughton High girls' basketball team Wednesday, Feb. 27 when the Black Knights travel to Plymouth South for a 7 p.m. game. After hearing appeals from 10 high schools, the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Football Committee has completed its realignment of the high school football divisions for next season's new playoff format. According to the Boston Herald, appeals from Arlington Catholic, Pope John, Matignon, Boston Latin, Diman, Mashpee and Maynard were approved by the MIAA football committee. Sharon tried to move from Division 3 Southeast to Division 4 South but their appeal was denied. With the divisions complete, Stoughton High finds itself in the newly formed Division 3 Southwest next season, which is comprised of a total of 12 schools. The Stoughton High volleyball team lost to Barnstable in the quarterfinals of the D1 South Sectional tournament, ending the most successful season in the five year history of the program.

Barnstable, a Massachusetts high school volleyball powerhouse - back-to-back state D1 state champions, and winners of 14 of the last 19 D1 championships - beat Stoughton in straight sets 25-4, 25-11 and 25-18, ending the Black Knights' historic season. Stoughton, 13-5 in the regular season (and 14-6 overall), finished with the best mark in the program's brief five year history. Schools are broken into six divisions for high school football, starting in 2013, after a MIAA vote was taken Friday.
This could be the last year of regional champions in high school football after the MIAA member schools voted 161-131 in favor of a new playoff format, which would crown state champions, starting with the 2013 season, according to the Boston Herald. The plan was previously approved by the MIAA Football Committee and Tournament Management Committee, but needed a vote of approval from the general assembly, which took place Friday morning at Assabet Valley Regional in Marlboro. After two years of the pilot program, the plan will be reviewed. Congrats to Coach Mark and all the athletes that won this award. Well done!!!! I remember all the wonderful experiences I had when Coach Mark was my coach in Field Hockey a very long time ago. He is one in a million and truly cares about his student athletes.   more ›
