The Great Hall at Stoughton's Town Hall was packed Friday night, Jan. 18 for a sellout performance of the "Murder at the Library" production, a fundraiser for Stoughton's Support Our Library Association (SOLA). The following is a letter of thanks from Pat Basler, Director, Stoughton Public Library (click here to view a photo gallery of the production): To the Editor: The Stoughton Public Library Board of Trustees and I would like to thank the many people and groups that participated in the first "Murder Mystery at the Library" fundraiser last Friday night. This murder mystery spoof was a huge success on many levels. It brought over 200 people out on a Friday night in January to enjoy amateur comedy in the beautiful Great Hall of Town…

A letter from School Committee member Dr. Erdem Ural regarding the need for "improved access to board meeting records." Dr. Ural would like to see recordings of meetings be made available online, on demand.

The following is a letter to the editor from Stoughton School Committee member Dr. Erdem Ural: To the Honorable Members of Stoughton Board of Selectmen (BOS), and Stoughton School Committee (SC): During the recent joint meeting of BOS and SC, communication and trust problems between the two boards were discussed and the need for improved access to board meeting records was highlighted. The current situation leaves a lot to be desired. If a board member wanted to understand why the other board voted a certain way on a particular issue, he or she could theoretically examine the meeting minutes, or watch the video record of the meeting on public access channel broadcast by SMAC (Stoughton Media Access Corporation). To see if the system is …

Jean and I attended the "Stoughton Reads Together" at Faxon Park on 4/21/12. We wish to commend Pat Basler for the excellence of the entire program, from noontime till 5:00 o'clock. The people that attended, know how great it was, and the people that missed it, lost out on a great day for the Town of Stoughton. The Civil War era drill exhibitions were marvelous. The group "Dixon's Gold Band" sang songs from the Civil war era, they were great. Again I say thank you to Pat Basler for a great day. ~ Leo Mellyn *** Editor’s Note - For photo and video highlights from the Civil War Remembrance Events, click on the following link: Gallery: Civil War Remembrance Day in Stoughton ***

Editor's Note: A week ago, About Town with Mark Snyder wrote about Paul Berger’s unpleasant experience at the D’Angelos at 2137 Central St. in Stoughton: ABOUT TOWN: Anti-Semitic Slur at Stoughton Sandwich Shop Causes Stir (Stoughton Patch, December 22, 2011) Berger, a Stoughton resident and a regular customer at that D’Angelos, registered for a D’Angelos rewards card during his Dec. 17 visit to the sub shop and then asked the manager, Eric Gurney, if there was a senior discount program, as well. Gurney responded, “Are you trying to Jew me down?” Berger said he couldn’t believe what he had heard: “[Eric] said ‘oops’ after he said it. I was truly shocked. I told him I resented it and that I would communicate with his boss. I threw my D’…

The Black Knights lost a tough one [Friday] night, falling to Franklin. But that wasn't the biggest loss. That came at the hands of the purported "supporters" of the team. How about this: Homecoming festivities spilled over from the school and ate up halftime as girls in sleeveless dresses minced their way across the field in heels to the garbled announcer reading biographies that seemed to date back to birth. One of the King and Queen's court was a Black Knight, held on the field interminably as the clock froze on zero and half time should have ended. The refs went to the locker room TWICE to fetch the team; which easily could have been slapped with a delay penalty. The Stoughton High band was fantastic--the best I have seen of any …

I was at the Bank of [America] ATM on Rt. 27 this morning and saw these two [electric] trucks just sitting behind the Jubilee Christian Church. They were just hanging out (see photos in the media gallery). This was at about 10 past 8 this morning [Thursday]. They were there for the whole 10 minutes I was there. With most of Stoughton still out of power, I would think they would have something to do. ~ Barb Walsh

Sorry Mark...this has nothing to do with being politically correct. The comment was ignorant and the defense of the argument is just as ignorant. There should be no tolerance of the use of derogatory terms for any race, religion or nationality.   more ›
