As part of the Stoughton Reads Together Program, the Stoughton Public Library held a Civil War Remembrance Day in town on April 21.
Stoughton traveled back to the Civil War Era this past Saturday as part of the Stoughton Public Library's Stoughton Reads Together Program. This year's book selection, “The Killer Angels,” is a historical novel written by Michael Shaara that tells the story of the four days of the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. On April 21, dozens turned out for a Civil War Remembrance Day featuring a parade, reenactments, camp, drills, bayonet and cooking demonstrations. The parade made its way from the Town Hall to Faxon Park, which was transformed to a Civil War campground for the afternoon. FRIDAY MORNING HISTORIC TOUR: On Friday, April 20, starting at 10 a.m., there will be a guided 1.5-mile hike from the picturesque Bradley P. Lessa Playground on West Street to observe vernal pools, budding trees and plants, the Gilbert Quarries, and the Benjamin/Lemuel Bird family barn cellar. This is a massive stone structure, with entrance paths newly-cleared by Gerry McDonald of the Conservation Commission.
