POSTHUMOUS HONORS AND A FUNDRAISER FOR JAKE HOFFMAN: Stoughton’s Jake Hoffman would have graduated college on May 10, 2013, with a degree from the Isenberg School’s Department of Tourism Management at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. To the continuing sorrow of his family, friends, and everyone who ever met him, he was tragically killed in an off-campus apartment fire in Amherst on Jan. 21, at the age of 21. In a wonderful gesture by his University, his parents - Anne and Dave Hoffman - received his degree at the Isenberg School of Management Senior Celebration on Saturday morning, May 11. REMEMBERING MIKE SWALLOW: He wasn't tall, but still, he was big on the football field. I first watched Mike Swallow, and his twin brother Ricky, when they played against my son in STOYAC's Mitey Mites program at age six. You could tell they were both great athletes, even at that age. My son played quarterback throughout his STOYAC Raider years, and through his senior season for the Black Knights football team at Stoughton High. Through many of those years, he handed off the ball to one of the Swallow brothers. And, more often than not, the short, but powerful, brothers would smash through someone and gain yards. UMass Amherst student Jake Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, died in a fire the morning of Jan. 21 at an off-campus apartment building in Amherst.
Stoughton's Jake Hoffman died from smoke inhalation, Amherst Fire Chief W. Tim Nelson told The Republican of Springfield on Tuesday. Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, was identified as the UMass Amherst college student who died in an early morning fire in an off-campus apartment building in Amherst Jan. 21. He was the lone victim. The cause of the blaze, which displaced more than 30 people, including more than 20 UMass Amherst students, is still under investigation, The Republican reported March 19. UMass Amherst student Jake Hoffman, 21, of Stoughton, died in a fire the morning of Jan. 21 at an off-campus apartment building in Amherst. Classmates remember Hoffman in a tribute article which ran in the Massachusetts Daily Collegian.
Like those who knew him in Stoughton, his classmates at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst remembered Stoughton's Jake Hoffman for his "contagious smile" and "charismatic personality." “He had the biggest smile. As soon as he walked into the room, he made everyone a little bit happier,” friend and fellow UMass Amherst student Jay Palermo told the Massachusetts Daily Collegian. STOUGHTON TURNS OUT FOR JAKE: The Wake at the Farley Funeral Home on Friday night, Jan. 25 for Stoughton's Jake Hoffman had literally thousands of people going through, some of whom waited nearly four hours in bone-chilling temperatures and snow to pay their final respects to this great young man. The home was adorned with photos that took guests from Jake's infancy to college. Many of the people pictured in these photos with him were crying uncontrollably near his open coffin. This great young man, and his wonderful family, had touched so many people that they were literally lined up around the building and down Park Street. Hoffman, a 2009 graduate of Stoughton High School, was in his senior year at the UMass Amherst, studying Hospitality and Tourism Management. Fire crews responded to a three-alarm fire at the Rolling Green apartment complex in Amherst around 4:45 a.m. on Monday. The fire, which caused severe damage to the building, displaced 32 people, 22 of whom are students at UMass, according to The Republican of Springfield. Hoffman was the only reported fatality. He was the beloved son of David M. and Anne (Morrissey) Hoffman of Stoughton. Born in Stoughton, he was raised and educated in Stoughton and was a graduate of Stoughton High School, Class of 2009. In addition to his parents, Jake is survived by his sister Nichole C. Hoffman and his brother Riordan J. A. Hoffman both of Stoughton. He was the grandson of Dorothy (Hannaway) Hoffman of Stoughton and the late Edward Hoffman, James J. Morrissey and Bernice (Hill) Morrissey. He was the great grandson of Edward C. Hoffman of Canton. STOUGHTON MOURNS JAKE HOFFMAN: The heart of Stoughton was once again broken earlier this week, with the tragic death of 21-year-old James E. "Jake" Hoffman in an apartment fire in Amherst Monday, Jan. 21. Hoffman, a 2009 graduate of Stoughton High, was in his senior year at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, studying Hospitality and Tourism Management in the school's Isenberg School of Management. At UMass in Amherst, Jake was a member of MESIBA Team, the Club Managers Association of America, and was the Vice President of the Jewish Student Union. STOUGHTON RESIDENT DIES IN AMHERST FIRE: About Town is in deep mourning after learning of the tragic death of 21-year-old Stoughton resident Jake Hoffman in an off-campus apartment fire in Amherst early Monday morning. Hoffman was a student at nearby UMass Amherst.
