The Archdiocese of Boston is taking steps to stop the spread of the flu.
Parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church, St. James and other local Catholic churches may notice something different on Sunday. The Archdiocese of Boston announced this week that it is allowing priests to suspend the distribution of wine from a common chalice during Communion as a precaution because of the recent flu outbreak, The Boston Globe reported. Churches were also notified that parishioners could exchange a sign of peace by “bowing to nearby parishioners instead of shaking hands,” reported The Globe. Earlier this week, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino declared a state of health emergency because of the flu outbreak and some nearby communities have also ran out of flu vaccine. It is still available in Stoughton, however. The Stoughton…

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS ON THE PULPIT: Linda Pane, Coordinator of Stoughton Life Teen told About Town that Father Joseph McDermott observed the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the Priesthood this weekend. Immaculate Conception Church marked this occasion with a Mass at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5. A reception with light refreshments was held following the Mass. Many parishioners and townspeople turned out to honor Father Joe on this momentous occasion. Father Joe is an integral part of the Stoughton Clergy Association, as well as the Friends for Seniors organization. He is a down-to-earth, well-liked, approachable man of the cloth. He hesitates to grab the spotlight and would have preferred that no one outside his church knew about it…

AMAZING CHRISTMAS DINNER: Stoughton's senior citizens were treated to an amazing Christmas dinner Saturday afternoon, and the cost was a mere three dollars. It comes from the hard work—and monetary contribution of a great organization called Stoughton Friends for Seniors. Their President, Dennis McCarthy, thanked all the volunteers from his hard-working Board for once again presenting a delicious meal, raffles, and fun to a sold-out crowd of hundreds of Stoughton Seniors in the downstairs hall of the Immaculate Conception Church. The youth of the Town were also involved in a big way. More than 30 members of the National Honor Society at Stoughton High came to serve on Saturday, while nearly twenty came the night before to set up the …

Five recent burglaries targeted Immaculate Conception Church on Canton St.
Nelson Moura, a 21-year-old School Street resident, was arrested on Friday, Dec. 3, after breaking into the Immaculate Conception Church on Canton Street for a fifth time. In Stoughton District Court, Moura said he committed the crime. Immaculate Conception's pastor, Father Joseph McDermott, said he was concerned for his parish. "Parishioners don't know too much about this incident, generally speaking, only what they've heard in the news," Father McDermott said. "People are shocked and upset, especially because this happened in a church." McDermott said he felt for Moura as well, agreeing that it's terrible such a young man would be involved in a crime like this. Of the five reported incidents in recent weeks, Father McDermott said that …
