The Black Knights edged the Warriors 73-69 on the road Tuesday night, coming away with the win in a battle of 9-1 teams.
The objective was simple for the Stoughton High boys’ basketball team: play the whole game. After giving up the lead against Mansfield and almost letting Oliver Ames come back earlier this season, falling asleep was not going to be an option against King Philip. “All we talked about is [playing] 32 minutes or more if we have to,” Stoughton head coach John Gallivan said. In a jammed pack KP gym, the Black Knights walked away with an important win. With both schools’ fans bringing the noise, it was the Stoughton fans who had the last laugh Tuesday night. “It feels good, really good. We came to their home court, they had a crazy crowd and we shut them up,” Stoughton guard Aaron Calixte said. Stretching the lead to 11 late in the game, the …

The Black Knights beat the Tigers 63-44 Friday night in Stoughton behind 26 points from Aaron Calixte. Nick Bruha led OA with 20.
The last time the Oliver Ames boys’ basketball team traveled to Stoughton, the Black Knights came away with a 79-76 quadruple overtime win in February of 2011 after Eric MacKinnon’s three pointer rimmed out as time expired in the fourth extra period. This time around, there was no need for overtime or late game dramatics. Stoughton won the first matchup this season between the two Davenport Division rivals, 63-44, handing Oliver Ames its first loss of the season (5-1) Friday night in Stoughton. Meanwhile, Stoughton remains unbeaten at 6-0. Despite the 19-point final margin, Stoughton coach John Gallivan will be the first to tell you the score was deceiving. “Everyone is going to think it was easy, but it was hard,” he said. Stoughton led …

The Black Knights return a solid and experienced core of players this winter. Stoughton travels to Foxboro on Friday (12/16) for the first game of the 2011-2012 season.
While she didn’t make a guarantee during her speech at the Winter Sports Awards last March, Stoughton High girls’ basketball coach Janet Sullivan was clear about what her team would be striving for in 2011-2012—a postseason tournament berth. At the time, the girls’ basketball team had just concluded a 5-13 season, one in which the team started 0-6, but finished an encouraging 5-7 down the stretch. Nine months later, with the 2011-2012 season set to begin, Sullivan isn’t changing her tone. She said with the team returning an experienced core, it’s a “reasonable goal” to qualify for tournament. “We have the tools,” said Sullivan, who is entering her 22nd year coaching the team. “It’s up to us to work hard and get something accomplished.” At …

The Stoughton High boys’ varsity basketball team, led by juniors Aaron Calixte and Marcus Middleton, aim for a deep postseason tournament run this winter. Their season starts Tuesday at Burlington.
Kris Joyce is not walking through that door, fans. But don’t expect Stoughton High boys’ basketball coach John Gallivan to go all Rick Pitino on us. Joyce, a tremendous talent and four-year starter who ended his career with 1,141 career points, graduated with the class of 2011. “You don’t replace a Kris Joyce,” Gallivan said. But, behind junior captains Aaron Calixte and Marcus Middleton, Stoughton is still primed for another tournament run. “I can’t think of a team with as good a backcourt as Middleton and Calixte,” said Gallivan, who is entering his eighth year as Stoughton’s head coach. Calixte is an explosive scorer and Middleton is a lockdown defender, but both make contributions on either end of the court. The Black Knights finished …

Okay, unless you were at this game against KP, trying to describe what we witnessed wouldn't do the team & their efforts justice. This was a game for the ages & one that fans that attended will be talking about for years to come. An instant classic! With two of the top players in the state in Calixte & Layman facing off against each other, this was a special game that took on greater meaning …   more ›
