The Hansen School "Communities," a program which brings together students of all ages, is celebrating the "Year of 50," in recognition of the school's 50th anniversary. The celebration started with a 60s Day.
Dressed like go-go girls and hippies and showing off flower power-themed clothing, tie-dye t-shirts, peace signs, Afro wigs and colored glasses, students and staff at the Hansen Elementary School in Stoughton celebrated the 1960s this past Monday. The 60s Day kicked off the school's 50th anniversary celebration, which will continue throughout the rest of the school year. The Hansen School (formerly the Chemung Hill School), located at the corner of Central and West Streets, opened for the 1962-1963 school year, principal Faye Polillio said. Following the death of three-year-old Shayla Lutz of Stoughton who was struck by a box truck in front of the Hansen Elementary School in a tragic accident the afternoon of Sept. 14, town leaders met Sept. 27 to discuss traffic safety concerns in the Hansen area and throughout the town. With a relocated crosswalk and an added sidewalk on Central Street and a striped sidewalk painted across the Hansen School parking lot, short-term safety improvements announced at this Sept. 27 meeting are already in place. State releases spring 2012 MCAS scores. See how Stoughton fared on the test in grades 3-10.
With the Spring 2012 MCAS scores for Massachusetts’ public schools being announced last week, the scores for the Stoughton Public Schools were discussed at the Sept. 26 Stoughton School Committee meeting. The test is administered in grades 3-8 and in grade 10. Third, fourth, sixth and seventh graders were tested in reading/English Language Arts and in mathematics. Fifth, eighth and tenth graders were tested in those two subjects, as well as in science and technology/engineering. The MCAS test is scored at the advanced level, proficient level, needs improvement level and warning/failing level. More than 150 people attended a candlelight vigil for Shayla Lutz, who died following a tragic accident on Sept. 14 when she was struck by a box truck in front of the Hansen School.
Drive by the Hansen Elementary School on Central St. in Stoughton and you will see two poignant reminders of the tragic accident on the afternoon of Sept. 14 which resulted in the death of Shayla Lutz, the 3-year-old struck by a box truck as she crossed the street with her mother. One is a cross with an abundance of stuffed animals and flowers all placed in her memory by the crosswalk sign just past the Central St. driveway to the school. The other are the words 'WE SHARE OUR SORROW,' on the school display board. By hosting a candlelight vigil last Friday evening, Sept. 21, the Hansen School P.T.O. put action behind those very words. The following is from the Hansen School PTO: The Parent Teacher Organization of the Hansen Elementary School has organized a candlelight vigil to honor the life and memory of Shayla Lutz, the three-year-old Stoughton girl who died Friday, September 14 shortly after she was struck by a box truck in front of the Hansen School. The vigil will be held this Friday, September 21 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Hansen School field, behind the building. Candles will be provided. All members of the Hansen School and Stoughton communities are invited to participate, as are family and friends of the Lutz family.
