BROWN, WARREN WOO STOUGHTON BUSINESS OWNERS: As the race for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts heats up - polls show Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) and Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren running neck and neck on the eve of the candidate's first debate Thursday, September 20 at 7 p.m. on WBZ - Brown and Warren recently met up with a pair of Stoughton business owners.   Brown visited a Stoughton resident's family repair shop in Mattapan (Auto Service and Tire). Looking for "Thank You for building this" businesses, he couldn't have picked a better place. IT’S OFFICIAL: SINAI NOW A STEWARD PROPERTY: New England Sinai Hospital is now officially a member of Steward Health Care, the largest fully integrated community care organization in New England.  New England Sinai Hospital is a 212-bed, long-term acute care hospital offering state-of-the-art medical technology and a highly skilled staff. Steward announced the acquisition on September 4, according to the Boston Herald and Boston Globe. The Globe reports that Steward will "invest $34 million in the [Sinai] hospital, which will convert from a nonprofit to a for-profit. That figure includes $13 million for hospital buildings, equipment, and technology. The group has also promised $10 million for the hospital’s pension payments" New England …

Low Voter Turnout Marks Thursday's State Primary in Stoughton

Just 8.8 percent of Stoughton voters went to the polls for the September 6 State Primary. Robert Jubinville won the Democratic primary for Governor's Council in District 2 and Joseph Selvaggi won the 8th Congressional District Republican primary.

Five takeaways from Thursday's Massachusetts State Primary results in Stoughton: 1. Low Voter Turnout With few contested races on either the Democrat or Republican Party ballots, turnout was low for the September 6 primary in Stoughton. Only 8.8 percent of registered voters in town (1,542 of 17,470) went to the polls on Thursday. 1,071 took a Democratic Party ballot and 471 took a Republican Party ballot. No Green Party ballots were taken. The only contested races were Governor's Council on the Democratic side and Representative in Congress on the Republican side. By comparison, 17.7 percent of voters took part in the September 2010 state primary, where there were more contested races on the ballot. Voter turnout in this past March's …

Robert Jubinville Wins Democratic Primary for Governor's Council in District 2

Attorney Robert Jubinville won the Democratic nomination for Governor's Council in District 2.

Election officials announced Thursday night that Robert Jubinville won the highly-contested Democratic Party primary for the second district of the Governor's Council.  Jubinville won the popular vote in many of the 39 towns in the second district in Thursday's State Primary, including Stoughton. Jubinville (35%) defeated Bart Timilty (28%), Brian Clinton (28%) and Patrick McCabe (9%), according to district-wide results posted on the Boston Globe's website. In Stoughton, Jubinville received 444 votes; Timilty received 288 votes; Clinton received 174 votes; and McCabe received 57 votes. There were also 108 "blanks" cast. As the Democratic nominee, Jubinville will face Republican Earl Sholley in November. Sholley ran unopposed in the …

I was surprised that I was actually the 22nd person to vote in my precinct today at 9:15 am. There was no checking of ID's. Actually, I gave my address and the lady checking couldn't find my address so I pointed to my name on the sheet. I could have pointed to anybody and she would have had no idea if it was me or not. VOLUNTEERS TO BE HONORED: A tradition started a few years back by former Board of Selectmen Chairman Steve Anastos will continue later this month under the direction of current Chairman John Stagnone. All volunteers in the town will be invited to a barbecue lunch on September 22 at the Old Colony YMCA Branch in Stoughton.  The fun will start at 12:30 p.m. Stagnone tells About Town that all town meeting members and volunteers on boards, commissions, and committees will be receiving their invitations soon.  “There will be a couple of hundred people invited, and usually around 125 show up,” he tells me, adding, “We tried to do something in December of 2011 with the Events Committee, but it never got off the ground.  So, instead of doing …

Democrats Square off in Governor's Council Debate

Democratic candidates for Governor's Council in the second district (which includes Stoughton) participated in a debate at the Morse Institute Library in Natick on August 8.

Four Democratic candidates for Governor's Council in the second district (which includes Stoughton) squared off in a debate at Natick's Morse Institute Library Wednesday night.  The Governor's Council is one of the state's oldest elected boards. It acts to appoint a range of Massachusetts officials including judges, parole board members and justices of the peace. The council advises the Governor on issuing pardons and communications. The Governor's Council has eight members. Including Stoughton, the second district includes all of parts of 39 towns. Democratic Party Candidates for Governor's Council to Debate Wednesday

Democratic candidates for Governor's Council in the second district (which includes Stoughton) will participate in a debate at the Morse Institute Library in Natick on August 8.

The Morse Institute Library and the Natick Democratic Town Committee will host a debate on Wednesday between Democratic candidates for the Governor's Council in the second district. The second district includes all of parts of 39 towns, including all precincts in Stoughton. The debate will be at the Morse Institute Library at 14 East Central St. in Natick. The candidates – Brian Clinton, Robert Jubinville, Patrick McCabe, and Bart Timilty – will debate at a 7 p.m. event that is open to all. The 8-person Governor's Council is the oldest elected body in Massachusetts, predating its statehood.
