RUNNING FOR THE EYE AND EAR: Stoughton's own Stu Weiner will be running the 2013 Boston Marathon as part of Team Eye and Ear. His fundraising goal for this year is $6,000, and all funds will go to the Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary. Stu writes, "Last year, thanks to the generosity of many, I was able to raise almost $6,900 to help support patients who need services to support the basic sensory functions such as hearing and sight that we often take for granted." He continues, "I am excited to be back with the team and running 26.2 miles for a great organization such as Mass Eye and Ear and hope we can once again work together in 2013 to help support the cause and help the patients who every day living is like running a marathon." CAR WASH! The Stoughton High Varsity Football team will be hosting a Car Wash on Saturday, August 18. This will take place at Walgreens Parking Lot in Stoughton, at the corner of Central and Washington Streets, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost for the car wash is only a donation of $5. The Black Knights finished the 2011 season 6-5 and 3-1 in the Davenport Division, turning in their first winning season since 2006. Stoughton just missed out on a playoff berth. The football team and coaches would love to see everyone at the car wash on the August 18 supporting the 2012 Black Knights and their quest to bring home a Davenport Division title. *** ONLY TWO MORE CONCERTS LEFT! Team Elite fielded an 8th grade boys' AAU basketball squad. The team features players from the Stoughton and Brockton area.
Team Elite, an AAU basketball squad, featuring 8th graders from the Stoughton and Brockton area, wrapped up a successful first season, and will continue to compete in summer league play, with an eye towards expansion in the near future. Team Elite was created by Marcel Smith, the Head Coach/Director of Basketball Operations; Marcus Siskind, the Finance Manager and Event Coordinator; Steve Andrews, the Assistant Coach and Assistant Director of Operations; as well as the owners and managers of Elite Health and Fitness in Stoughton. As a first year program, the program only fielded an 8th grade boys' team, but the Team Elite 8th graders found immediate success. The team went 18-9 and won two Zero Gravity tournaments. The Stoughton YMCA edged Elite Health & Fitness for the top spot in this week’s “Best Of” poll.
In this week's "Best Of" poll two fitness centers on opposite ends of Central St. were vying for the title of "Best Place to Workout in Stoughton." After a week of voting, Stoughton Patch readers selected the Stoughton Branch of the Old Colony YMCA at 445 Central St. In what was the closest finish to date, the YMCA won with 42 percent of the vote, edging Elite Health & Fitness Center (1519 Central St.). Elite came in second with 40 percent of the vote, just 15 total votes behind the YMCA. The poll opened Monday morning and closed Friday morning. Nearly 700 votes (675 to be exact) were cast. Patch is continuing its “Best Of” series this week, which allows readers to vote for their favorite businesses and places in Stoughton. Last week we asked readers to vote for the best place to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in town. This week we’re asking where the best place to workout is in Stoughton. Stoughton has a mix of traditional gyms and health clubs, places to lift weights, places to receive personal one-on-one training, places for a cardiovascular workout, as well as yoga and martial arts studios. Voting in the poll below is open until 9 a.m. this Friday (March 23). We will announce the winner at noon on March 23. MARTIAL ARTS HONORS FOR STOUGHTON STUDENT: Joe Marchetti, a student of Jiu Jitsu at Elite Health & Fitness Center, won first place at the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Grapplers Quest Submission Grappling Tournament earlier this month! His various achievements at the tournament include: White Belt 169/179 FIRST PLACE and No Gi (2 medals) THIRD PLACE. Congratulations to Joe. The Stoughton-based team will take part in its 17th Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The team will hold its fourth annual “Stride-a-thon,” Sunday, Sept. 11 at Elite in Stoughton to help raise money for the cause.
Sunday, Oct. 2 the New England Patriots will be in Oakland to take on the Raiders, but a little closer to home, Peggy’s Patriots will hit the pavement and take on cancer, participating in the 2011 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Boston. This will be the 17th time Peggy’s Patriots has taken part in the event, which is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Since they started walking, the Stoughton-based team has raised more than $180,000. The team was formed in memory of Peggy Waterman, a Brockton woman who died from Breast Cancer in 1976, said Waterman’s daughter, Diane Allen, who serves as one of four members of the team’s fundraising committee. FORE A GOOD CAUSE: The Second Annual Al Techtor Benefit Golf Tournament will be held on September 24, 2011. It is sponsored by Elite Health & Fitness Center. Celebrate the life of Al with the help of his family and friends. I attended last year’s inaugural event, which raised $4,000 and allowed Elite to award two scholarships to both a male and female member of the graduating class of 2011.
