ABOUT TOWN: Joe Dawe Honored at Stoughton High Football Game (And More...)

JOE DAWE HONORED: Stoughton High School Athletic Director Ryan Donahue wanted to honor longtime Stoughton High football public address announcer Joseph Dawe, Jr. last Friday night, Sept. 28, at halftime of the Stoughton High-Mansfield High football game. Dawe was joined on field by the Stoughton High cheerleaders during a brief ceremony. As the public address announcer that night, I read a prepared statement that Donahue received from Joe’s son, Joseph Dawe III. This is what I read: Joe Dawe began his career in the Stoughton Public Schools in 1962 as a 6th grade teacher and later as the assistant principal at the Jones Elementary School.  During this time, Joe was a founding father of the Stoughton Public School's bilingual education …

Students from low income families tend to do more poorly on the MCAS and the West has a higher percentage of these students than the other schools in town. The achievement gap between low income and middle/higher income students is a problem in many, many places. Its cannot all be blamed on language differences. If you want to look at more of the details of the scores, they can be found here: …   more ›

DAWE SCHOOL'S COMMUNITY READING DAY: The Dawe Elementary School held their 5th Annual Community Reading Day last Friday. Principal David Barner said, “We started it with our school council five years ago. We wanted to do something different to increase interest in reading, and to involve the community in the education process.” The Dawe School had a broad spectrum of readers, who also handled some of the questions from the classes. I had the honor of reading Holly Robinson Peete’s book about autism for Mrs. Whoriskey’s third grade class. What a great group of children, who asked excellent questions, about diversity, newspapers--but, mostly about my dog, Harry.   Readers included: Former Dawe School principals Joseph Dawe, Jr. and Dr. …

The Dawe does a wonderful job promoting a love of reading. But I do find it concerning that parents were not notified of community reading day. My son told me that a man came to read to his class. He knew his name, but not who he was or why he was there. I recognized the name as a school committee member and assumed he was there to visit the school as part of his work with the schools. I had no …   more ›

Stoughton Schools, Businesses Looking to Help Park St. Fire Victims

Of the 17 displaced in the May 1 fire on Park St., five are students in the Stoughton Public Schools (SHS, OMS and Dawe). Donations are being collected at Stoughton High and at the O'Donnell Middle School, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rizzi said.

An early morning fire on May 1 at a multi-family home on Park Street in Stoughton displaced 17 people, including an infant, Stoughton Fire Chief Mark Dolloff said. While five families were displaced, there were no reports of injuries to civilians or to the crews that responded, according to SFD Captain Doug Campbell. Campbell said all residents self-evacuated. The Red Cross is assisting these residents, he said.  Kat Powers of the Red Cross said that four of the 17 victims are children under the age of 12. Dr. Marguerite Rizzi, Superintendent of the Stoughton Public Schools, said five of the victims are students in the Stoughton Public Schools.  The Stoughton Schools are stepping up to help these families, who lost most, if not all of …

Dawe School Students Tackle Math Boot Camp

Last week (April 2-5) the Dawe Elementary School had a Math Boot Camp, experiencing Math across the curriculum through a series of engaging lessons, activities and games.

Dawe School students in Stoughton went through a Math Boot Camp last week, with the culminating activity taking place last Thursday morning when all classes from kindergarten through fifth grade circled the building to determine its perimeter, using themselves as a nonstandard unit of measure.  Braving the cold weather, the students counted off, making their way around what became a large, continuous chain of students. It took 345 Dawe students to circle the perimeter of the rectangular-shaped school. The various classes had to estimate how many students it would take to complete this task and explain how they came up with their estimate.  Mrs. Murphy's fourth grade class won the challenge, estimating it would take 338 students. The fourth…

My child enjoyed math camp week at the Dawe. I am hopeful that this experience helps the students understand how math is incorporated into many subjects and can be interesting, important, and enjoyable. Even more than that, I am hopeful that the week and all of the planning went into it helped the staff to understand how math can be more than worksheets, number scrolls, and isolated tasks. Photo Gallery: 2012 Dawe School Fair

Highlights from the Dawe School Fair, Saturday, March 17, 2012.

On Saturday, March 17, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., the Annual Dawe School Fair attracted a large crowd of families. And, what fun it offered! From the Grace Church Moon Walk, to the Game Room, there were prizes and activities at every corner! The cotton candy and slush were absolutely delicious, as was the popcorn, the cakes, the pies and the cookies (About Town had to do some quality testing. It all passed with flying colors and full stomachs.) There was also a lunch room, karaoke, theme baskets, stationery station, a Cake Walk, stage raffles, temporary tattoos, kids’ raffles (no kids were raffled off while I was there), face painting, and a Patch Photo Booth, with Jeff Pickette taking funny photos for the kids to view online. The Stoughton …
