REMEMBERING MIKE SWALLOW: He wasn't tall, but still, he was big on the football field. I first watched Mike Swallow, and his twin brother Ricky, when they played against my son in STOYAC's Mitey Mites program at age six. You could tell they were both great athletes, even at that age.  My son played quarterback throughout his STOYAC Raider years, and through his senior season for the Black Knights football team at Stoughton High.  Through many of those years, he handed off the ball to one of the Swallow brothers.  And, more often than not, the short, but powerful, brothers would smash through someone and gain yards. That's how I know the Swallow boys.   Sure, they had their problems, as many young people have had, but as we remember Mike …

However, friends of the family confirmed Hoffman was the victim by Monday evening. And by Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 22, Hoffman had been officially identified as the victim, Amherst Fire Chief Tim Nelson told the Republican. Hoffman, who graduated Stoughton High School in 2009 with my son Dan, was an amazing kid. He was…

I worked with Jake at the UMass Berkshire Dining Commons. Jake was really the nicest kid and had the biggest smile, everywhere I saw him, whether in the dish room, passing in the library, or in our shared hospitality class. We exchanged phone numbers the last day of the fall semester and were planning to hang out this spring. I will always remember Jake's great attitude and huge, friendly smile. …   more ›

Inside the Huddle: Making Sense of the Stoughton High Football Team's Wild Season

In a season full of victory and joy and tragedy and one frustrating defeat, Stoughton High senior quarterback Dan Eckler says there is plenty to be thankful for as Stoughton heads into its final contest, the annual Thanksgiving game vs. Canton.

Editor's Note: Heading into his final high school football game this Thursday vs. Canton on Thanksgiving, Stoughton High senior quarterback Dan Eckler shares his thoughts on Stoughton's season. Eckler has been playing football for 11 years. As the starting quarterback this season, he has helped lead Stoughton to a 9-1 record.  *** There is no other way to describe this season other than comparing it to Hurricane Sandy that devastated the east coast a few weeks ago. From the outside looking in, all people can see is that we lost one of our brothers, and our season is going to end on Thanksgiving, only to reiterate the playoff curse that Stoughton seems to be doomed by. They may also see that one of our senior captains got hurt halfway …

Playing with Heavy Hearts, Stoughton High Football Blanks Foxborough in First Division Contest of Season

The Stoughton High football team (5-0), playing in memory of teammate David Wade, a senior who tragically died on Sept. 29, came away with a 20-0 win over Foxborough (3-2), Friday night in Stoughton.

Photos in the media gallery by Justin Braga *** Foxborough running back Kiivone Howard had three touchdowns in every game so far this season, for a total of 12 scores in four contests. That trend stopped Friday night. While Howard picked up more than 100-yards on the ground against Stoughton, he was kept out of the end zone, as was the rest of the Foxborough team, with the Black Knights shutting out the Warriors. The Stoughton High football team's 20-0 win capped an emotional week for the Black Knights. Senior lineman David Wade, 17, died last Saturday, Sept. 29 after being accidentally shot. Just eight hours prior to the start of Friday's game, Wade's teammates attended his funeral. But thanks to jumping out to an early lead and coming up…
