Stoughton's Nicole Jacobs Running Boston Marathon for Cancer Research

On April 15, Nicole Jacobs from Stoughton will be running in the 117th Boston Marathon as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team.

The following is adapted from a press release from the Dana-Farber: On April 15, Nicole Jacobs from Stoughton will be running in the 117th Boston Marathon to help conquer cancer as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team.  Jacobs, along with more than 550 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge teammates from across the United States and around the world, will run Massachusetts’ historic marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston with a goal to raise $4.6 million for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Nine Stoughton Residents to Take Part in 24th Annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk

The 24th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, which helps to support lifesaving adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, takes place September 9. The registration period is still open.

The following information is from a Boston Marathon  Jimmy Fund Walk press release: On September 9, nine residents from Stoughton will walk up to 26.2 miles along the historic route of the Boston Marathon in the 24th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai. They will be among the 9,000 walkers expected to participate with the collective goal of raising more than $7.5 million to support lifesaving adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Stoughton walkers include: Sandra Clark-Martin; Mary Courtney; Erin Gomes; Melissa Jenne; Ellen Kaufman; Joel Kravetz; Deborah Levine; Mark Levine; and Trudy Miller. Stoughton Cancer Survivor to Take Part in Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk Next Month

Stoughton resident Ellen Kaufman, a cancer survivor, will be taking part in September's Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, walking for her daughter Erica Ebner, who was recently diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The following is a press release: Ellen Kaufman, 53, of Stoughton, is a cancer survivor who will walk 26.2 miles in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk not only as a cancer survivor, but for the four generations of women within her family who have all battled cancer.   “It is such a devastating disease,” says Kaufman. “I have watched it hit my family over and over again.” In the 1960s, Kaufman’s grandmother, Nettie Collier, passed away from leukemia. “They just didn’t have the advances in medicine then that they do now,” says Kaufman. “I barely remember them treating her.” In 1995, her mother, Bernice Kaufman, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She had surgery, but opted out of further treatment and passed away 11 months after being …

14 Stoughton Riders Taking Part in Pan-Mass Challenge This Weekend

The 33rd Annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge will take place August 4-5. This year, 14 Stoughton riders are taking part.

The following is adapted from a press release from the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge: This Saturday and Sunday, August 4 and 5, 14 residents from Stoughton will ride in the 33rd annual Pan-Massachusetts Challenge (PMC), the nation’s pioneer charity bike-a-thon that raises more money than any other athletic fundraising event in the country. They will be among 5,500 cyclists who will ride with the collective goal of raising $36 million to support lifesaving adult and pediatric cancer care and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund. PMC riders range in age from 13 to 88. Some are seasoned tri-athletes while others are "weekend warriors" having trained for this event alone. The PMC has 11 routes ranging from 25 to 190 …

Stoughton's Burger King Supporting Pediatric Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

More than 600 Burger King restaurants are participating in "A Chance for Kids" program, including the Stoughton location on Park St. This is the 13th consecutive year Burger King is taking part.

The following is a press release from Burger King/The Jimmy Fund: Burger King guests can help fight childhood cancers from May 28 through July 1 by donating $1 to the Jimmy Fund through the A Chance for Kids program at participating Burger King restaurants in six New England states. Stoughton High Volleyball Earns First-Ever Postseason Berth By Beating Sharon

Stoughton clinches first-ever state tournament berth, beating host Sharon 3-0 on Friday night. The two volleyball programs also raised more than $5,400 for cancer research.

The Sharon and Stoughton High School volleyball programs donated more than $5,400 to cancer research after filling the Sharon High gymnasium stands Friday night. Stoughton's varsity team also clinched the fourth-year program's first-ever state tournament berth by defeating Sharon, 3-0 (27-25, 25-16, 25-19). The two schools dedicated their matches Friday to cancer research for the second straight year. The freshman, JV and varsity head coaches all introduced their rosters before playing. At the microphone, each player and coach said which person they were playing for. Both teams wore pink socks. The Stoughton players wore pink shirts during the introductions. Stoughton, Sharon Volleyball Teams Will Be “Digging For A Cure” Friday Night

For the second straight year, the two high school volleyball programs will play for cancer research. The freshmen, JV and varsity level matches will be held at Sharon High on Friday.

It was because of monetary donations and the support of the town that the Stoughton High volleyball program exists, coach Ken Gay said. For this reason, he likes to have his team “pay it forward” and give back to the community. Earlier this month, the volleyball team organized a “5 for the Cure” 5K walk, which raised close to $3,500 for the American Cancer Society. On Friday, Stoughton will travel to Sharon and the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity squads from the two schools will play in the second annual “Digging for the Cure” event. Funny how SHS's other sports aren't community friendly, as well as not being very successful. I remember the days when SHS sports were the pride of the town and younger students could hardly wait to be part of the athletic programs so they could represent their community.
