Gallery: Stoughton Teens Bring Joy to Children at Christmas in the City

Dozens of Stoughton youth recently volunteered at a huge Christmas party for Boston-area homeless shelters.

A busload of teens from the Stoughton Life Teen program. recently volunteered at the annual Christmas in the City event in Boston, helping to make the holidays a little brighter for homeless children and families in need. The Stoughton Life Teen volunteers were joined by members of the Stoughton YAC, as well as other volunteers from the area. Stoughton Life Teen went on Saturday Dec. 15 to help set up and decorate for the party, held Sunday Dec. 16, which was held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in South Boston. Stoughton Life Teen helped to create over 6,000 paper snowflakes which were used to decorate the hundreds of tables set up for guests. Photos: Carolers from Stoughton High Jazz Choir Bring Holiday Cheer to Library, Fire Station

Members of the Stoughton High Jazz Choir recently performed holiday songs at the Stoughton Public Library and Freeman St. Fire Station.

Normally a library is a quiet place. But after school on the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 19, the Stoughton Public Library welcomed a group of carolers singing holiday songs. The carolers were members of the Stoughton High Jazz Choir, accompanied by director Griffin Coombs. Stoughton Public Schools Fine Arts Director John Kearns arranged for the visit. The SHS Jazz Choir performed from the second floor over looking the ground floor of the library. Two-Alarm Fire Causes Extensive Damage to Stoughton Home on Christmas Eve

A two-alarm fire on Kenmore Road in Stoughton caused extensive damage, but there were no injuries.

A two-alarm fire caused extensive damage to a Stoughton home on Christmas Eve, according to Stoughton Fire Department officials. The Stoughton Fire Department received a call at 9:13 p.m. on Dec. 24 for a fire at a single-story wood-frame dwelling at 38 Kenmore Road in Stoughton, SFD Captain Don Jasmin said. A fire on the first floor extended in to the attic space, according to Jasmin. The home has extensive damage, but there were no reported injuries to any of the home's occupants or to the first responders who were on scene, Jasmin said. The Stoughton Fire Department was led by Group 4 under the command of Deputy Chief Greg Goldberg and Captain Bob O'Donnell, according to the Stoughton Fire Rescue Facebook page. CHRISTMAS IS MY FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR:  I've written about it frequently, but I just love the Christmas spirit, and all it brings.  Despite the fact that my dad passed away a week before Christmas 31 years ago, I still look forward to the music of Christmas, and the spirit of goodness that goes with it.  Just look at what the people of Stoughton have done for Firefighter Jack Hussey, whose family lost everything this past Friday due to a fire at their Abington home. I'm sure residents would help him any time of year, but it just seems that people open their wallets more for their fellow man around Christmas.  Look at the food pantries, and how they fill up with needed items, when goodness shows through at the holidays.  Charities receive …

Here's the list of what is open and closed in Massachusetts on Christmas Day this year, Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012: Open (at owner’s discretion): Closed: No Trash Pickup on Christmas Day in Stoughton On Tuesday, Dec. 25, there will be no curbside trash collection in observance of Christmas Day. Trash collection for Christmas Day will be scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 26, in addition to the regular Wednesday collection. This is standard procedure for any holiday. Residents are reminded to have their trash out at 7 a.m. on the day of their scheduled collection. How Do You Balance Greed and Gifts?

Consumerism surrounds the holiday season: is greed inevitable, and how do you avoid it?

For those children who celebrate, Christmas' biggest connotation can be a pile of gifts under the tree.  With this in mind, a panel of staff contributors at The Chicago Tribune tackled the question of whether it's inevitable to see greed in their kids around Christmastime. The parents weighed in on suggestions to remind kids of Christmas spirit. Among their suggestions? Help your kids round up some old toys to donate to charity before giving them new toys. Sign them up to participate in a community service project. The Tribune's advice got us thinking at Patch about how we were taught or are teaching our kids to be less greedy around the holidays.
