Celebrate Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, in Stoughton with fun events and delicious recipes. The holiday began Dec. 8 at sundown.
This year, the Jewish holiday of Chanukah began Saturday, Dec. 8 at sundown, and ends a week later on Sunday, Dec. 16. Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, commemorates the story of the Maccabean Revolt against Syrian rulers in present day Israel 2,100 years ago. The victorious Maccabees wanted to rededicate Jerusalem's main temple but had only enough oil to kindle the Eternal Light for one day. But, the oil lasted for eight days, until more oil could be prepared, and the holiday of Chanukah was born. Today the holiday is commemorated with the lighting of the Menorah each of the eight nights, playing dreidel and eating special holiday foods like potato pancakes (latkes). CHRISTMAS FOR THE VETERANS: The second Christmas Party put on for hospitalized veterans at the Brockton Veterans Administration Hospital by AMVETS District 6, was held last Thursday, Dec. 22, and there were plenty of familiar faces in the crowd. District 6 is made up of members from the Stoughton and Randolph AMVETS Posts. Along with serving ice cream, cake and drinks, presents were handed out to all the veterans. In addition to Christmas parties, District 6 throws ice cream parties at the Brockton VA Hospital twice a month, hosts off-station parties for the patients at the Randolph AMVETS Post, and puts on an annual summer barbecue. The Shaloh House Chabad held Menorah lightings at the Stoughton YMCA and at Cobb’s Corner on Dec. 21, the second night of Chanukah.
Students in the YMCA’s afterschool program (grades K-7) and community members gathered in the lobby of the Stoughton YMCA Wednesday evening as Shaloh House Chabad Rabbi Mendel Gurkow led a Chanukah celebration on the second night of the eight-day Jewish holiday. Rabbi Gurkow told the story of Chanukah and led those in attendance in reciting the traditional prayers while lighting the Menorah. The children also sang Chanukah songs and ate Chanukah gelt (edible chocolate coins). Following the celebration at the YMCA, Rabbi Gurkow lit the eight-foot tall Menorah at the Shell Station in Cobb’s Corner, at the intersection of Stoughton, Sharon and Canton. According to the Shaloh House Chabad website: On Chanukah, we celebrate the miraculous …

NATIONAL GRIDLOCK CEO WINS AWARD? I thought it was a joke. National Grid Massachusetts President Marcy Reed will receive an award for "Outstanding Achievement in the Workplace" from the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. That's the equivalent to the Stoughton Chamber honoring the MBTA for shuttering our historic train station. Now, Marcy Reed was very polite to me when I grilled her after Tropical Storm Irene knocked out our electricity for close to a week. Her excuses were weak, and she was in Hawaii as the storm approached in August. I wrote many stories about "National Gridlock"-- enough that I was hissed and cursed by National Grid workers on the street. Paul Gizzi and the Greater Boston Chamber should really be ashamed of …
