ABOUT TOWN: Stoughton Spiritual Leader Rev. Jean Lenk Remains Upbeat Despite Cancer Diagnosis

Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town. If you see or hear something we could use here, let us know by sending an e-mail to pmpco@aol.com.

STOUGHTON PRAYS FOR REV. JEAN LENK: Rev. Jean Lenk was leading a very busy life, like most of us.  The spiritual leader of the First Congregational Church of Stoughton on Pierce Street. for the last eight years, she is also a mother of four, wife to her husband Peter, and caretaker of her 92-year-old father, who lives with them.    She was preparing for Holy Week, the most solemn week of the church year. Ironically, she got life-altering news on Good Friday. The 59-year-old Lenk told About Town that she wished to share the news that turned her life upside down, and the faith that she has that it will be righted once again.      She said, “I learned that day [Good Friday] that I have Stage IV cancer.  It started in my pelvic region, and it …

About Two Months After Cancer Diagnosis, Selectman Walsh Given "Clean Bill of Health"

Selectman Cynthia Walsh thanked the community for all of its support as she underwent treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Walsh recently announced she has been given a clean bill of health.

As part of an emotional, heartfelt thank-you to the community for all of its support as she underwent treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Selectman Cynthia Walsh announced she had been given a "clean bill of health" at the Jan. 29 Stoughton Board of Selectmen's meeting. Walsh said she was first diagnosed on Oct. 24, 2012 and was given the good news on Jan. 2, 2013, going from stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma to being in remission over a period of two months and nine days, she noted. Walsh said she still has to undergo two more sessions of chemotherapy and has to be in remission for at least five years before she would technically be cancer free. According to the Mayo Clinic's website, "in Hodgkin's Lymphoma, cells in the lymphatic system grow …

Welcome to "About Town with Mark Snyder," a column that will keep you up to the minute with what's what, who's who and what's going on around town. If you see or hear something we could use here, let us know by sending an e-mail to pmpco@aol.com.

JINGLE JOG A SUCCESS!  A couple of dozen people jogged a mile to ring in hope and support for a Stoughton woman battling cancer this past Saturday, December 15. The jog was held at the West School Athletic Complex. Bells were given to each participant, so they jingled while they jogged! There were raffles (About Town actually won!), kids played on the playground, hot chocolate, coffee, and donuts (I partook) were served. The walk for Erica Ebner, a 28-year-old long time Stoughton resident, who was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, raised over $2,500. After months of chemotherapy, surgeries and a hopeful outlook, Erica and her friends were saddened to find the treatments didn't work and the cancer has spread. She has a …

Cynthia Walsh announced at Tuesday's Stoughton Board of Selectmen meeting that her recent adornment of scarves is not a fashion statement but rather an attempt to cover an incision from a recent biopsy. "Those close to me know that I have been undergoing tests for the past several weeks and Monday, I got the final news. I have been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma Disease," she said at the Sept. 26 meeting. Walsh continued,  "I assure the public that I will continue to serve in all my capacities as long as I can...just like I have been for 36 years." Fighting Cancer, Two Stoughton Moms Taking Part in Relay for Life

Two Stoughton moms, recently struck by cancer, are taking to the Walpole High School track on June 15 and 16 to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society at this year’s 2012 Relay For Life of Greater Norwood.

Stoughton moms Theresa Stanley and Tracy NewBorn became acquainted with one another when their daughters became best friends back in kindergarten at the Dawe Elementary School.  Their daughters, now 10 years old, are no longer their only common bond. Theresa and Tracy now share the unfortunate task of facing cancer head-on. In fact, they were diagnosed just months apart from one another.  Tracy received her diagnosis of breast cancer last June and in October Theresa learned of her kidney cancer.  Tracy explains, “When I was diagnosed Theresa was always emailing me positive things, then when she was diagnosed it was such a shock.”  A visibly emotional Theresa said “we really became close.” While the two fought their battles, they found “the…
