Blue laws prohibit retailers from opening before midnight on Black Friday.
Black Friday is starting earlier than ever, as some national retailers have announced they will open the night of Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 22. However, here in Massachusetts, state blue laws prohibit stores from opening until midnight, according to a report by the Boston Globe. Current blue laws prohibit retailers in the state from opening on Thanksgiving, thus preventing them from getting an early start on Black Friday sales, according to the Globe article. Some exceptions are restaurants, health care facilities and gas stations. The following is a press release from the office of Norfolk County District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey: District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey launched a new way for Norfolk County businesses to deal with bad checks this week. “The existing ways of dealing with bounced checks has left a lot of merchants, tradesmen and small businesses frustrated and still out their money,” District Attorney Morrissey said. “This kind of crime is an indirect theft from the honest customers who have to pay higher prices to cover the loss. Students credit advisor Eddie Rodrigues for the growth in the business and marketing program. They say DECA has made them more well-rounded individuals.
Thinking on your feet—it’s something the members of Stoughton High’s DECA chapter will be doing plenty of Tuesday at the Mansfield Holiday Inn as they take part in a District competition. In addition to a written test, DECA students will be asked to role play with a judge and solve a business problem (like employee theft) or come up with a marketing strategy (like how to maximize sales on a tax-free weekend). The students—some participating in pairs, others alone—are given mere minutes to come up with a solution and present their idea. “It’s the closest thing to actually pitching something to a boss,” junior Adam Leonard said.
