Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week in Massachusetts

Gov. Deval Patrick signed a bill proclaiming the third week in October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week.

Deval Patrick signed a bill proclaiming the third week in October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Last month, Patrick signed the bill that says the week aims "to raise awareness of the occurrence of breast cancer in men and to encourage regular testing for breast cancer amongst all citizens of the Commonwealth." Stoughton Hair Salon Raising Funds for Fight Against Breast Cancer

During the month of October, Hair Cuttery salons in New England, including the one in Stoughton, will match contributions with a $10,000 donation to Passionately Pink for the Cure, a program of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Research shows good nutrition and exercise can help prevent breast cancer. Here are some resources around Stoughton to help you stay healthy.

You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD.   Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer.   According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 American women will die …

Kafka-Sponsored Bill Designates Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week

The bill names the third week of October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week, which builds off October being Breast Cancer month.

The following is a press release from the Office of State Representative Louis L. Kafka: State Representative Louis L. Kafka (D-Stoughton) and State Senator James E. Timilty (D-Walpole) announced that their bill to raise awareness of the rate of breast cancer in men has passed both branches of the Legislature and is now on Governor Deval L. Patrick’s desk. Brought to their attention by a constituent currently battling the disease, the bill names the third week of the month of October as Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week, which builds off October being Breast Cancer month. Stoughton Cancer Survivor to Take Part in Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk Next Month

Stoughton resident Ellen Kaufman, a cancer survivor, will be taking part in September's Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, walking for her daughter Erica Ebner, who was recently diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The following is a press release: Ellen Kaufman, 53, of Stoughton, is a cancer survivor who will walk 26.2 miles in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk not only as a cancer survivor, but for the four generations of women within her family who have all battled cancer.   “It is such a devastating disease,” says Kaufman. “I have watched it hit my family over and over again.” In the 1960s, Kaufman’s grandmother, Nettie Collier, passed away from leukemia. “They just didn’t have the advances in medicine then that they do now,” says Kaufman. “I barely remember them treating her.” In 1995, her mother, Bernice Kaufman, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She had surgery, but opted out of further treatment and passed away 11 months after being …

Stoughton Fire Department Looking to Extinguish Breast Cancer with T-Shirt Sales

The Stoughton Fire Department is selling t-shirts with pink ribbons this October as part of a breast cancer awareness fundraiser.

For the second straight year, Stoughton Firefighters are selling pink ribbon t-shirts in the hopes of extinguishing breast cancer. In August of 2010, the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) voted to add Breast Cancer Awareness as a charitable cause each October, and the Stoughton Firefighters IAFF Local 1512 have followed suit with breast cancer t-shirt sales. The t-shirts are black with pink writing on the front and back. On the back of the shirt there are two large pink ribbons in place of the two o’s in Stoughton (see photo gallery). The Stoughton firefighters are wearing these shirts this October, and are selling them to the general public. The t-shirts are $15 and 100 percent of the proceeds go to breast cancer awareness …
