PURIM IN CANDY LAND: Ginger bread or licorice, maybe jelly beans or chocolate truffles, mixed with Hamatashen and Purim decorations! Shaloh House Chabad of the South Area, located right here in Stoughton at 50 Ethyl Way, will host its annual Purim Diner using the theme of Candy Land. “It will surely make the party sweet and colorful, and excite many children as well,” Rabbi Mendel Gurkow, Director of Shaloh House Chabad, writes About Town. Purim is the most joyous Jewish holiday of the year.  Children and adults dress up in costumes, exchange gifts of food, and celebrate.  Jews commemorate the story of Queen Esther; her heroism in saving her Jewish nation from the evil plots of Haman of the Persian Empire in the year 423 BCE.    While …

STOUGHTON SCHOOLS ON THE RISE: Boston Magazine annually lists the top public school systems in the State. Of the 350 public school districts in Massachusetts, last year we ranked 104th.  This year, the Stoughton Public Schools have climbed to number 80, putting Stoughton among the top 25% of public school districts in the State.   Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marguerite Rizzi remarked that, "This number puts us well above average, while we still operate with a far smaller than average per pupil expenditure, and have a diverse population with a variety of needs. I think we can be quite proud; while we are aiming for the top 25!" *** ITALIAN SPAGHETTI SUPPER: The Trinity Parish Episcopal Church holds an Italian Spaghetti Supper on Saturday…

I'm pretty sure that they only include the 135 districts listed-- only those in the eastern part of the state. I'm glad the schools are improving. But, to be #80 out of 135 is not what I would consider very good. This is the link to the rankings, if anyone is interested in: http://www.bostonmagazine.com/best-schools-in-boston/index.html   more ›

NEW RESTAURANT APPROVED: CV Cafe is a familiar name.  There are places as far away as Canada and Australia with restaurants by the same name. But, Tuesday night selectmen approved a husband and wife team opening a 24-seat restaurant by that name in a space occupied by three now defunct eateries.  The Cafe is scheduled to open in the coming week at 2 Canton Street, which formerly housed a hot dog place, an Italian restaurant, and a Middle Eastern restaurant.  It's part of the Trackside Plaza near the train station. We wish them luck. In Steve Kelley, they have one of the best landlords in town.  FORMER PORTER STREET PUB:  Selectmen last night, on a motion by Cynthia Walsh, ordered the owner of the former Porter Street Pub property, at 26-28…

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: The speculation has ended.  The thunderous applause is over. Stoughton Human Resources Director Marty McNamara at Tuesday night's Selectmen's meeting announced the August 2011 winner of the coveted "Town Hall Employee of the Month." The winner is (drum roll)  Gloria Veale of the Assessors Department. She gets a reserved parking spot and a nifty (suitable for framing) certificate.  Gloria stepped up big time after Town Assessor Paula Keefe retired, and as the office manager, she kept the place moving forward. Joseph Gibbons, who gave a report on new growth in town Monday night, is the new Assessor. Congrats to all.
